Memorial Day, May 28, '18 - Remembering PTSD

(Post Traumatic Stress Disorder).
Our veterans' group will be raising awareness of PTSD this Memorial Day, May 28.

Memorial Day is set aside to remember those lost in our wars.
We should also remember those - military & civilian of all nations - who to a greater or lesser extent have been and are being lost to PTSD.

The following vid presents the WWI Suresnes American Cemetery in France.
The vid highlights the graves of twin sisters Dorothea and Gladys Cromwell.
Both served as American Red Cross civilian nurses in The Great War.
Both became victims of PTSD.

The following article relates the story of the sisters.

Thanks for your post, M. We appreciate their service. But PTDS has many valid sources, especially in kids, than from military experiences. Some of us should know. Aa-V.
Thank you for the opportunity to post this, Aa...

I was hoping someone would bring up the broader scope of the affliction.

My oldest son suffers from PTSD and thankfully that he quit dealing with the VA docs cause he found out that they were purposely overbooking patients so he decided to seek help outside medical help and told me this past Mother's Day that the meds were helping him to feel so much better now and that his life was almost the same as before he had joined the military.
Bearwoman ~ They have great treatment for PTSD between Therapy and some medication. It is a long road but there is a bend in that road. I hope your son will find peace in his heart and mind soon.hug
Memorial day is a day to honor the dead.not just vetrans.that what vetrans day is for.
The custom of honoring war dead dates to ancient times.

What we now observe as Memorial Day in the U.S. had its origins after the U.S. Civil War (1861- Spring '65). That's why it's observed in May, whereas many countries observe Remembrance Day on Nov. 11, the day the Armistice ended WWI.
As sky notes, it's since expanded to include remembering all our dead loved ones.
(See the Memorial Day blog - by glow, I believe.)

U.S. Veterans are recognized on Veterans Day (Nov. 11).

Active U.S. sevice members are acknowledged on Armed Forces Day, the 3rd Saturday in May.

miclee I could never figure out of why they just didn't honor them all together instead of on different times.
Yes ptsd is horrible to live with....many veterans and first responders deal with it....my only hope is that one day there is light shone on ptsd that doesn't come just from these careers....that's where the education is falling down right now...it is not career driven...it is trauma driven and can effect anyone who has been through one or more traumatic experiences....bouquet
