You wouldn't do it to a dog!

Nobody in there right mind would starve a dog or cat to death by cutting off it's food supply, but now by law it's fine to do it to a human being wow

"LEGAL permission will no longer be required to end life-prolonging care for patients in a permanent vegetative state, the UK Supreme Court has ruled today"

"The ruling will effect up to 24,000 patients with permanent vegetative state (PVS) and minimally conscious state (MCS), meaning they can now be effectively starved and dehydrated to death if the medical staff and relatives agree that this is in their “best interests"

Is it just me or is this just wrong on so many levels dunno

Molly, well that's sort of what I'm suggesting, the details of how it would work could be easily arranged but it would need to be much quicker than the current system that as Biff says takes forever & the patient has normally died anyway before they hear the case, that's just passing the buck as far as I;m concerned.
Yeah Z, that's why they are changing the system. Going through the courts is too slow and unwieldy.
courts take to long as a person suffers and winners if any are the legal crowd again has to be a better weay I thinks is very hard when your loved one becomes like this hard to let go but theirs decency even in death
Cervatilla, I know almost what you mean as I had a really bad dose of flu this year & basically lost about 3 days, though as far as I know I did get up to feed the animals, but what you're saying rather lends itself to my point, if the body has shut down & knows nothing what's the point of starving it to death? I don't want to end up as dehydrated pile of bones, getting smaller by the day.

Your body should have rejected the chicken on principle laugh
I agree the bodies natural function just before death is to stop eating and drinking...a friend of mines father just passed away and he had quit eating and drinking the week before and then they found him unconscious....so by artificial means you are just circumventing the natural process by continuing to feed and hydrate against the bodies natural process just to keep a shell lying there that you can visit every day....if all hope is gone I see this as the most natural....just letting the body do what it does...its like it prepares itself for death and then we intervene....why should the court have any say over professionals which are doctors in this case...its doubtful they have any medical experience at all and its the wrong place to make medical decisions....particularly if the family was in agreement....this reminds me of a case where they had to prove the woman was dead and the family was trying to prove she was alive...I cant remember why but I do remember the court declaring she was dead....wine
M4, I think that may be the crux of the problem, seems we've all got into the mindset of keeping a body alive because we can, maybe the answer is to let those with no hope go naturally without medical intervention, hard as it is for love ones who naturally want to keep them as long as possible, but all that's for them & nothing to do with patient welfare dunno
Virgo, I can see exactly where you're coming from & seen similar situations, personally I'd like to be able to choose whether to have that type of surgery, and I suppose to a point you can if you're well enough to insist, however for those beyond arguing with doctor/family it's then the difficult choice of pressing on with medical treatment or losing them immediately, maybe medical science is in limbo between having gone so far but then not far enough to make a real difference in some cases dunno
As a follow on from this blog topic, I'm forever reading articles in the papers about scientists trying to reverse the aging process, now whilst it would be great to be 20 again banana this can only go one of two ways, millions of 20 year old (looking) people dying of old age, or people living longer/forever, can anyone imagine a world with the population doubling every generation uh oh green would disappear from the planet, the whole lot concreted over for housing, food shortages etc, it would be a living nightmare, then someone will be blogging about the system they use to decide who has to die today doh
Its funny I just saw an update on the case I was talking about today....they wanted their daughter kept alive based in religious beliefs that death doesn't come until the heart stops beating....what they fail to see is that without unnatural intervention the heart wouldn't be beating....the family is appealing the case....wine
If I were in those states, I would rather not be kept alive for the sake of it. I've already told my daughter to put a pillow over my head if necessary. She was a bit shocked which is good - she'll remember I said it.

Maybe a hefty morphine drip might assuage any concerns about suffering during the process.

I'd certainly rather finances were channelled into those who have prospects of a reasonable quality of life.

Two thirds of the world are starving and are very much conscious of it, but we don't have an emotional attachment to them.
Red, think that belongs on the Brexit blog, or does it wow laugh
Jac, since writing this blog this very scenario happened to a friend's mother, she lasted weeks sad flower so any of the previous comments on the blog about this process being quick can be disregarded as they don't represent reality.
The problem with your solution is due to the law any involvement of other people is going to land them in prison, we now know due to the Brexit debacle that governments can not be trusted to make decisions the people want or are in there best interests doh
Which solution is that, Z?

I talked about three options and one of them was a euphemism for the other two which are currently practised.
Biff, you'll never please everyone but those that don't want to be tortured when on death's door should have the option to ask for help (in advance of course) to end it quickly & without repercussions to those involved, for me the sooner religion is removed from government, in favour of logic, the better professor
If euthanasia of a terminally sick person can be done humanely (no pain) then i will support it.
LaFonda, that's another can of worms touched on in another blog about lethal injections, seems drug companies are scared to make such a thing due to worries of a religious comeback, having had to have beloved pets put down in the past I know such things are possible but may require an adjustment in people's mindsets to make it happen dunno
It is different for different folk, and should be treat so. Some people say they would rather be left to die but the body has a survival spirit.

18 years ago our country had something called pathway, were food and water was denied a person. Unbeknown to me they put my mother on this. It took 2 weeks for her to pass. Thank goodness she did not feel agitated or anything she slipped into a coma. I later learnt about this pathway, it does not happen now, but I will never forgive myself for not knowing. She had a broken hip and I'm sure she would have recovered.

I myself have learnt 2 good methods to end things for me, if I'm able I would rather put my face on grin leave all tidy, letter to my sons and just go to sleep my way. teddybear teddybear
Red, that's the thing, all this really only applies when we're past the point we can action anything ourselves, so reliant on others to make the decisions, left to the current government who couldn't decide what to have for breakfast little chance of any change.
Well zman I will have to get in before government policy of the day takes over. I don't even trust doctors these days, some will push you through this and that instead of letting nature take its course, others make decisions that almost foretell your futuredoh

We just have to take it as it comes really and keep our own council. teddybear
Red, doctors can't even decide if Aspirin is good for, so I agree I wouldn't trust them far as I could throw them.
thumbs up thumbs up but after all my gym work I could throw them in the Tyne easy peezy rolling on the floor laughing rolling on the floor laughing
Red, get someone to film it so we can all see that wow rolling on the floor laughing
rolling on the floor laughing rolling on the floor laughing I will I will yay cheering applause
