Beauty in the Eye of the Beholder

These past few months, despite my best efforts, I haven't arisen early enough to capture a sunrise and I haven't found a place that strikes me to take sunset photos. Both times of the day have me in awe of the amazing colours painting the sky.

Saturday morning, I awoke at 4:30 am, determined to capture the rising sun. Unfortunately, there was only one little cloud in the sky, so the colour was minimal. However, the full moon was still very evident, and I managed to capture a cool shot of the moon as it was fading.

Taking my normal route through the farmers fields and dodging the blackberry vines that have grown over the foliage tunnel, I rounded the curve and came back out on the gravel path next to the hayfield.

The sun had risen just above the mountains and it's rays highlighted the mist laying across the field. I thought it was an 'okay' photo, but as usual, the sun is blown out (white), although the rays can be seen emanating from it, turning the mist a beautiful warm gamboge yellow, along with the sky, due to the lingering smoke from forest fires.

I posted it on the local community page and was shocked at the number of views and comments on it. Only one other photo I've taken has received the kind of comments and views that this one has. Wow. The funny thing is, I just don't see what's so 'special' about it.

I'm on another group page for posting photos of BC (where I live), and have been incredibly impressed at some of the photography on there. Every week or so they choose someone's photo as the fb header for the page - and believe me, there are professional photos that I couldn't even begin to compete with. I don't post there often, but thought I'd post the photo that everyone seemed so enamoured with.

You could have blown me over with a feather when one of the admins asked if they could use my photo as the header for the page for the next little while. Uh, yeah! And honestly, I still don't see why everyone seems to love it, but who's arguing? lol

I've sold one copy of it to a resident already, and I'm absolutely tickled pink at the response. Never, in a million years, would I have thought it would be so popular. It just goes to show you, that beauty's in the eye of the beholder, and you just never know what will appeal to people.

Beauty in the Eye of the Beholder. thumbs up
Sometimes I initially look at my photos and may not like something about it.
In particular, it often wasn't EXACTLY as I wanted to capture the scene.
Some little thing bothered me about it.
Then, months go by, and I look at the same photo that I haven't seen in a long time
and am pleased at what a good photo it is, even though it wasn't exactly what I originally intended.
Sometimes we are our own worst enemy. laugh

Some other times, the person complimenting my photo hasn't a clue. laugh
Take a look at their photos and you'll see why they think yours is so good. laugh

Then again, everyone has at least, slightly different tastes. That's part of life. peace
Or take another lesson from it Imp, you could do with brushing up on your measuring skills ... lol
whats that they say about measuring yourself with others roll eyes

Anyways congrats Lady, understandable why you're as chuffed as you are....wine
Oh Imp we both know you are your own harshest judge!

I saw your pics on FB....with all the likes & comments that said stuff like, "WOW" "Amazing" and so forth and so on.

Aren't you glad you are a morning gal?
Wen - grin
Jim - for the most part, I think it's people that don't have a clue. However, when professionals are commenting, then I think, okay, what did I do right this time? rolling on the floor laughing
Itchy - good point! thumbs up rolling on the floor laughing
Fay - yes, I'm definitely my own worst critic. wow

Yes, I'm glad I'm a morning gal, because it's so quiet and peaceful at that hour, not usually anyone else around. And you get to see things that very few others do. banana
Congrats on your photo being used on a photogs page - one of the highest compliments for amateurs, I think. It's hard to know what others like, isn't it? I'm often surprised by requests for copies of pics I've taken which in my mind were average, to say the least.
Imp - I've met professionals that haven't got a clue. laugh
You may recall that I blogged elsewhere, that I met a very haughty photographer in Florida,
who did still life photos, (things that don't move in a controlled environment, that he arranged).rolling on the floor laughing
Seriously, what could be easier ? Maybe pictures of still flat objects, that took their own picture ? laugh
You just keep me simply impressed and often when I get an ambious bug it's because of you doing your passion. I'm looking for mine as I get settled in, actually I'm waiting for my passion to walk up and bat me up side the head.
ps - a guy cut the lock of the shed so I can access my bike. Now I have to find someone or a place to get the dry rotted tires replaced. The shop closest to me has a bad rep. But at least little by little I'm getting closer to having a working bike again in my life.
Oh and one more thing, I have to get a contraption so the dog can ride too.
Rogue - Exactly! Something I would have thought 'meh' others want copies, and things I think are spectacular, others are 'meh'. lol. I guess that's why we take photos to please ourselves, as if we only took them to please others, we'd probably never please anyone. grin
Jim - yes, it depends on what they're professional in. As you say, if it's in a controlled environment, that's a lot easier than trying to capture wildlife. You can 'make' your opportunity in a controlled environment. In the outdoors, mostly, you get one opportunity and that's it.
Woohoo Fay! You'll be out on your bike soon! All you need is to get some kind of basket for Bella to ride in. I have my panniers on my new bike, but haven't taken the light or my basket off the old one yet. I should do that, as there's been occasions when I wish I had my basket. I haven't needed the light - yet.
