Regifting...

Maybe it's happened to you... receiving a gift that is similar to one you already own or a gift that really didn't fit your lifestyle? Touchy subject, as always there's a chance it will hurt someone's feelings to find you no longer have the gift they thought would be right for you.

There are websites that discuss regifting. Some say it's a no-no while others give a list of regifting rules to follow to reduce the chance of embarrassment.

Last Christmas... actually BEFORE Christmas, I warned family not to buy me presents. I've been planning a move and need to drastically reduce my inventory of clothes and technological gadgets. That said, my daughter gave me Alexa, the Echo Dot from Amazon.
Groan... okay, it's setup in the living room.

I've got bamboo steamers, food dehydrators and lots of shirts. Good thing they stopped giving me cologne as I haven't worn any in a generation.

What's the consensus on regifting here?

After living with the extreme hoarder, I do not keep anything I am not madly in love with. I won't keep something for sentimental reasons any more nor do I want anything I have to dust. I have no problem regifting.

ps - I now have one big Alexa and two dots. I should gift one of the dots.
So, you didn't keep that 8 track player I gave you for XMas Fay ? wow crying laugh
I would advise giving the surplus to a local charity soup kitchen or Salvation Army Chat.
Goodwill is NOT a charity. scold (The owner is a millionaire. The main good will is you helping him become richer).
I donated a bag of old clothing today. Not sure what the name was on the truck. They are parked near the post office, I'll remember to check the next time I go by there.
Fay regifts, Jim regifts... that's it?
I give good books and DVDs, and I hope the recipients do pass them on.
I tried to donate a stack of current hobby magazines to the local library resource center. The woman at the counter pointed out two rows of workstations with kids on computers. It appeared that ALL of them were playing car-chase style video games. Her comment was "Their interests lie elsewhere and it's doubtful any of them would be reading a magazine."
I'm sure many people won't admit it. I don't have a problem telling someone their gift is a regift.

I also don't waste money on cards. I take a five dollar bill and make it into a card. to you from me rather than give it to Hallmark.
I usually gift cash.
Um.... I never stated that I regift.
I see no wrong in regifting if the gift suits the person. The value remains. The money not spent is irrelevant. I often give stuff to people if I think they will like it. Generosity shouldn’t have limitations

Okay, so what is your position on regifting?
Sorry palm, I got interrupted and posted after you.
I haven't taken a position on it. However, I've never done it, nor thought about doing it.
I've also never given money as a gift, except to a charity.
When I do give gifts, to people I know, thought goes into what the individual enjoys and can use.
Cash... it works for me.

I've seen on a few sites that it's important in some Asian cultures to give cash at a wedding. Basically, they are using the gift money to pay for the event.

We buy red envelopes for specifically for this. Different sayings on the outside for different occasions. My wife translates for me.
