Finding messages...

In the 'old' days, If you had to contact someone, the first line was to actually visit them in-person or write a letter, affix a stamp and mail it. After telephones were invented, you could call them. If they didn't answer, you would have to call again (and maybe again) until they were available to answer the phone.
A generation later, someone invented an answering machine, giving you the ability to leave a recorded message that you hoped they listened to. The bad part of that was listening to a tape playback of 20 messages to get the one that was important. You also had the ability to send a FAX if they had a machine connected to their phone.
Technology changed and email became available. This eliminated the need for mail and FAX messages.
Add cellphones a generation later and communication improved as people carried a phone with them and didn't have to 'wait to get home' to listen to messages. Shortly after that, text messages became a strong part of cellular service. Instead of calling or sending an email, you could type out a message for instant delivery. Icing on the cake added photos to your texting.
That gave rise to several applications to handle texting including Whatsapp that allows for group texting and video chats. Competition is Signal app doing nearly the same thing but it's private so the information in the app isn't visible on the phone.

Where am I going with this?
I'm communicating with lots of customers, suppliers, coworkers who are all on different platforms. When I have to research 'who said what' or where a link or photo is, I'm checking through different locations. Lost time searching for details, drawings and messages. I dislike Gmail but it synchronizes on all my devices so I'm forged to use that as my main means of communication.
The office uses Streak for sales and marketing, Asana for managing the projects from start to finish and Quickbooks to track the money... that's more than I want to deal with.
No choice. It's the hand I'm holding right now.

Adidas: Lose, lose, lose...

Late last year, Adidas had a falling out with Ye aka Kanye West and now they have warehouses stocked/stacked with his Yeezy shoes. Talk of donating the shoes or offloading them to some factory outlets has complications. I read that even after their 'breakup' they would have to pay Ye royalties for the sale of the shoes.
Destroying them causes problems environmentally, rebranding them probably poses some ethical problems. Whatever the solution, it's a case of lose, lose, lose for Adidas.

One of the many different Yeezy styles:

Locks in the forums...

I see several long-time forum threads have been locked/archived because they are too long and creating problems with the website operation.
It's interesting to know they are locked because of length and not for content.

On another site I visit, all the blogs have been archived.
They opened a new site that appears to be dedicated for blogging.
All the individual sites they own had been separate, blogging is now under one umbrella.

I'm finding there are easily 50 new bloggers and no familiar faces.

Train Wreck...

The Ohio derailment last week had me thinking of what it takes to coordinate a multi-billion dollar operation of trains, tracks and linked control systems. My guess it's as stressful as being in the hot-seat of an an Air Traffic Controller.

This scenario may have happened at one point in time:

A young woman who recently graduated college applied to the east coast railway for the system track controller position of their new fully automated computerized system.
The person doing the interview said her college transcript was great and that she scored very high on their aptitude test including all the required computer skills.

When asked why she was applying for such a position, her response was 3 generations of her family had been employed by the railroad system and she wanted to keep up the tradition.
"Excellent" said the interviewer.

We are nearly finished with your interview, but I want to say the position you have applied for is very stressful. We want to be absolutely sure you can think clearly in critical moments of a life-or-death situation. I've got one final question.
"Okay" said the woman.
"If two trains were approaching each other at a high rate of speed, but they were on the same track, what would you do?"
She answered "Simple, I would activate the system override and switch them to separate tracks"
"And if the computer system didn't respond?" the interviewer asked.
"I'd radio down to switching watchman to switch the tracks manually." Said the woman.
"Okay" said the interviewer "What if the watchman didn't reply?"

The woman responded with "Hmmm, I'd call my uncle Roy."
"Your uncle Roy?" the interviewer asked.
"Yes" the woman responded "My uncle Roy"
"What could your uncle Roy possibly do?" said the interviewer.
"Nothing" said the woman "But after 47 years of workin' on the railroad, he ain't never seen a crash like the one that's gonna happen today!"

Measure twice, cut once...

Mistakes can be expensive and there's a saying in the woodworking industry: Measure twice, cut once. If your 'expert' doesn't know this, you need to replace him.
I make detailed drawings for the items I release to production and 'map out' any special cutting so there's no room for mistake... It's a great plan until someone doesn't read the drawings and decides they are good enough to 'wing-it' thinking it's a simple jigsaw puzzle.

Remembering the time I ordered only one sheet of really expensive material.
We priced a job that could be done using one sheet... no room for error.
Woodgrain material and I noted the steps.
#1 cross cut the front panel - do this first
#2 rip (long cut) the 2 side strips
#3 cross cut the remainder of parts

I got a call from the installer "Hey, you didn't order enough material for the job."
Sure I did... I referenced the note on the first page explaining the cutting instructions were on the second page.
"Oh, I didn't look there" was his response.

very mad

Another sheet of material had to be ordered.
The completion date was moved back (as in late) and the client was angry.
Back-charging the installer for his mistake wasn't enough compensation.
All the profit was gone.
Reputation for being on-time was blemished.

Advice to Adidas: Sell them at 'normal' price...

It's been a few months since Kanye West made a fool of himself and lost the Adidas account, costing himself millions and millions in lost sales to Adidas. Kanye, who renamed himself Ye, had his model sneaker called Yeezy. This all happened before Christmas 2022 and sales dropped sharply. Currently, Yeezys are being unloaded to places like factory outlets, eBay StockX, etc. where they sell a prices equal to what they are actually worth... without the hype from Kanye.

It goes to show, people (read: kids) didn't buy them because of any advanced design or technology, they bought them (at any price) because of the influence Kanye had over them.

8 Tips To Help You Save Money Every Month in 2023

Saving money can be tough these days. It seems everything is so expensive, which can make it challenging to get ahead. But saving money doesn’t have to be an uphill battle.
Discover: 4 Reasons You Should Cancel Amazon PrimeRead More: 3 Ways Smart People Save Money When Filing Their TaxesSee the List: GOBankingRates’ Best Banks of 2023
Saving money should also be a priority — as much as 40% of Americans have less than $300 in savings. Fortunately, saving $1,000 per month is possible without making significant changes. There’s no need to be an extreme coupon-er or resort to cutting your own hair.
Of course, saving $1,000 per month may not be possible if you have a very limited income. In that case, you can pick a goal that matches your salary, even if it is just an extra $100 per month. Here are some ideas to get you started.
Budget, Budget, Budget
You have probably heard it many times, but that’s because starting a budget is an essential part of saving money. If you don’t know where your money is going, it will be difficult to direct some of it into a savings fund.
So if you don’t already have a budget, consider starting with this step. There are many popular budgeting methods, such as the 50/30/20 method. With this style, 50% of your money goes to needs, 30% goes to wants, and 20% goes to savings. However, there are also many alternative methods that may suit your situation better.
Separate Wants and Needs
The first step above is to start a budget, and we touched on a budgeting method that separates wants and needs. One problem is that the line between wants and needs is becoming increasingly blurred.
For instance, some subscriptions can feel like a need, but is that really true? Try going without one for a month and see how it changes things for you. If the difference is small or there’s no difference at all, you likely have a want and not a need.

Get Out of Debt
This list might be about saving money, but you can’t completely forget about your debt. That is especially true if you have significant high-interest debt like credit card balances.
For example, suppose you have $5,000 in credit card balances with 19% APR. If you pay the card off in 12 months, you would incur $440 in interest. And that is assuming you pay the card off — if you aren’t making your payments or just paying the minimum, you’ll end up with even more interest. High-interest debt can crush your money-saving dreams, so be sure to take care of it sooner than later.

Automate Your Savings
Many savings accounts will let you set up automatic monthly contributions. While that is convenient, it can also make it easier to reach your goal.
Since your savings is happening in the background, you won’t be tempted to spend it on one of those pesky wants we talked about. Online savings accounts let you save the precise amount you want each month, so this works for all incomes.
Try a Money-Saving Challenge
Money-saving challenges are numerous online. However, one that is especially common is the type where you consistently increase the size of the contribution.
For example, consider one in which you save $25 the first month and increase your contributions by $25 more each month. By month 12, you would be saving $300 per month. While that doesn’t quite get you to $1,000, it gets you a good part of the way there on its own.
Reduce Your Transportation Costs
While changing how you get around might be difficult, think about how you might be able to reduce your transportation costs. For most Americans, the biggest three expenses are housing, transportation and food, usually in that order. The difficulty of making changes to these expenses also tends to go in that order.

Google products...

The company I'm working for is 'in bed' with Google products... It's a double edge sword for me, but I have no choice but to be onboard. My phone, Laptop, Notebook, Desktop are all synchronized. My sales manager has access to my calendar and assigns new projects and schedules appointments.
We went over my workload this morning and she fills in the missing information on our scheduling system... also a Google product.

I make it a point not to share photos on Google Drive or Dropbox. Anything work related gets downloaded to my computer and copied to my folder on the company server. It's cloud based and I have a special application to access it, not that I have sensitive data to store, but it's more secure.
My phone has close to 5,000 photos in different folders. When I'm meeting a new client and they are asking for a design, I often pull up photos of something I've done that matches their request.
Once in a while the Google server has an outage and it's 20 minutes for the email and calendar to repopulate. Not often, but when it happens, it's usually when I need to access something important (like invoices pending payment) and I don't have hard copy or saved the PDF locally.
