In Mexico, water being heated to make a chocolate drink is brought just to a slow boil. In Ms Esquivel's book, this is extrapolated into the perfect recipe for romance. But if the water is allowed to get to hot, it ruins the chocolate, just as unrequited love that gets too hot can cause anger and resentment. It is at once a story about family responsibilities in Mexico (at least during the Mexican revolution) and about unfulfilled love.
