Lightweight reading maybe but I like the whole series. Discovered when featured in one of the Sunday papers. I bought all the early paperback editions as they were printed, catching up later with missed titles from the local library and bargain purchases from Amazon.
I feel the books delightfully capture a more relaxed 1960’s pace of life in the gorgeous rural North Yorkshire and are full of humour. The author is prolific, working under several names and has written over 100 titles in this and other series largely about crime and Yorkshire.
The early books I read said the stories would soon be turned into a TV series and some 10 years later this came true and what a massive and instant success it was with a lengthy run of 372 episodes sadly ending on Sunday 12th. September 2010.

….and yes, I loved reading the James Herriot series too!
