I recently got a new puppy. He's an 11 week old boxer. I've been putting him in a crate when i'm gone since he is not potty trained. The first few tiems I put him in he was great. No accidents and no crying.

Lately whenever he goes in the crate, when I get home I have a HUGE mess to clean up. He gets diarrea all over the place, when normally his has solid bm. Also - and this is my main concern - he has been rubbing his face raw agains the gate of the cage. His whole snout is red and raw.

CAN ANYONE GIVE ME SOME TIPS/ADVICE ABOUT BREAKING HIM OF THIS HABIT? OR POSSIBLY A SUGGESTION AS TO WHY HE'S DOING IT? I'M JUST AFRAID FOR HIS OWN SAFETY, AS I'VE CRATED PREVIOUS DOGS AND HAVE NOT HAD THESE PROBLEMS IN THE PAST.

THANKS!

He is older now and too confined. Neurosis is setting in. You need to potty train him and soon so he can at least have the house or room in which to sit and enjoy his new environment.

yes dont crate your dog, also what type of food do you feed him ,dry food is best according to my vet,try paper training first then move the paper to the door and after a bit outside of the door , however you train him do the same everyday and be sure to reward him for good behavour, scolding for bad behavour but only scolding ,never hit or rub his nose in it as some may tell you. Good luck

The crate may also be getting to small for such a fast growing puppy. The sooner you start with the house breaking the sooner it will be over with. He will not be able to stay in that crate for the est of his life. Good luck and have fun with the little guy. comfort

As a living being - he is just different. And maybe he doesnt like being in a crate/cage?... and is desperate and lonely when put in there, and this is upsetting him? Puppies get desperately lonely you know.

Eleven weeks is VERY young for a pup to be left alone.

If you remember that one and a half months is equal to one year in human terms, then your pup is equal to a 2yr old human child.

What about enlarging his area? And putting in some things for him to amuse himself with ... something to chew would help too, to gnaw his teeth on.

Whatever is going on, he seems to be displaying signs of severe anxiety. This might also reflect in his stool quality, similar to humans when they become anxious. You really don't want separation anxiety or any other behavioural/emotional disorder to set in.

A puppy generally toilet trains fairly quickly. At this age, rather than rely on the newspaper technique, best to put him take him outside regularly on a lead, and take him to the same area where you want him to go to the toilet. Then reward him each time there is success, and make a real fuss about what a great job he did and how pleased you are. Certainly don't give him any attention or get cross with him when he soils the crate area. He should not be in there at any rate. Make the rest of the house puppy proof while you are away, with a few of his favourite toys, and rotate them. Play as much as you can with him before you leave, besides the fun and bonding, it will tire him out!

All the best. It shoudn't take long. hug

kg95326: I had to give up my dog when he was a year old, and I'd had him since he was 5weeks, It broke my heart. I couldnt manage him anymore, I simply hadn't the time :(

Yes, years ago, I had a Weimarana puppy from when he was only weeks old. Poor thing spent most of his days alone in the large back yard, which soon began to look like moon terrain with all the pot holes!

In the end when Angus was 9mths old, I had to admit I did not have sufficient time, and mainly energy as I was working full time and other life issues. I found him a new home in no time, with a couple who owned a golf course, and the wife was home all day with him. A happy ending, but I can still see his gorgeous face staring at me through the rear view window of the new owner's car. But sometimes, we just need to think of the other's needs, be it person or our beloved puppy.dancing dog

OMG!!!!! I can't believe you keep your puppy in a crate!! thumbs down The poor thing is clearly unhappy.....

Despite having to go out to work, I don't believe this should necessarily exempt one from having a dog... it CAN be worked around.

But in the formative weeks, intensive training is necessary. I have successfully trained many dogs within a max of two weeks, to include waiting for food, sit, stay, beg, paw-giving, leash behaviour, house-training and the like but it does need concentrated involvement.

If you can't spare a week or two off work...... sigh

Having been a boxer owner they are an intelligent dog who respond to praise They need walked and exercised. You should toilet him in the morning and give him a treat when sucessful Putting him in a crate causes him great distress and i think that is causing his diahorrea as boxers will eat anything with no real problem also he may need wormed

They are a wonderfully social dog but will chew through almost anything when they are at the puppy stage

Weinamara's are my favorite dog, and a lady on this very site advised me to contact the breeders association as i wanted and still do one of these beautiful dogs.

What i wanted to know was would the dog be happy being home alone for say a working day without destroying it's environment and would it be capable being a dog of getting along with cats.

I was grateful for the advise, and i have had to postpone my ownership as a result until i get to Malta and settle there once all the crap here in the UK is finished.

Another reason i can't wait to get out of here!!

Keywords, HOW LONG do you crate him. What do you feed him. I have another 10 or 20 questions. But here is the what happens. STRESS, PARASITES and many other things. YOU NEED TO TAKE YOUR PUPPY TO A VETERINARIAN.

I'm glad i was given good advice, and i cant thank her enough for it!

Thet are shall we say frisky, full of beans and energy and it would be almost cruel to lock them in a house and come back and take them for a walk before and after work and then play with them.

That's even putting aside it may seriously put my two cats out of their routine of running my life.

All in all although i would dearly love a dog, i cant risk it upsetting my cats and destroying my house!

That will have to wait till the cats have passed on in their old age.

I am considering even not having any more dependants to allow me to be able to work more when i get my life sorted out, then qualify.

Thats why i am always playing with other peoples petslaugh

1. Crate training is great. But you need to make sure that he has the proper size crate. esp for a boxer that is growing. They should always have enough room to walk in, turn, and be able to lay down. But not much else. They generally don't want to soil were they have to lay. I have a year old Standard Poodle with whom i crate trained. Its wonderful

2. MAKE SURE THAT YOU NEVER USE IT AS PUNISHMENT. They should want to be able to go in their crate so never use it as punishment if they have an accident in your house. It makes them associate the crate with being in trouble and they get nervous and anxious when put in when you have to step out. Make the crate a happy place for the dog so they think it is theirs and want to go in.

3. Try putting a sheet or blanket over the crate. It may help with their anxiety of yoiu being away from them. And maybe a shirt or towel inside that smells like you. It may comfort the dog while you are away.

4. Make sure you are giving them plenty of excersie. Boxers are an extremely active breed and if yoiu take him/her on long walks before you crate them they may be calmer and tired so they won't get as anxious. Don't listen to people who tell you crateing is best. Its all in how well you crate train them.

Hope i have been of some help. I am speaking from experience both professionally ( as i am a pet groomer and personally i have successfully crate trained my own large active dog and she loves her crate)

JUST SO EVERYONE KNOWS!!!!

I thank everyone for their advice. And I wanted to clear some things up.

My pup is NEVER crated for more than an hour or so at a time and I only put him in there when I'm not home. I work from home so he is never put in when I'm here. I only put him in there when I had to places where I could not take him with. I try to take him with me everywhere I go. He loves to socialize so I take him with me to the store, family/friends houses, etc.

I had to take him to the vet for his next round of shots and he explained to me (as did my mom and some of you guys) that he has separation anxiety. He hates being here without me. So I decided to move his crate into the living room and when I leave I put on Animal Planet. It has actually made a HUGE difference! Not one mess!!

The food he is on is Purina puppy chow. This is what the vet recommend him be on, as the breeder had him on generic brand puppy chow and the vet said that that was not good.

I take him potty multiple times per day. Whenever he wakes from a nap, whenever he plays hard and periodically through the day when I feel he needs he might have to go. I dont' walk him that much at the moment because I'm in Wisconsin and it is very cold out and he hates being outside. I have him wearing a jacket/hoodie. I usually complain when I see people dressing their animals, but Buster will not go to the bathroom unless he's wearing something. He came from a warmer state and is not used to the weather yet. He's getting better though.

And I would not have gotten a dog just to throw him in a kennel all day long while i'm out and never let him play. I'm not a cruel person. If I didn't think I could take care of him I wouldn't have gotten him. He's a very happy boy. He's very playful, very active and VERY loving. He's a cuddler! And he is the cutest thing ever, I've never seen a dog hop and bounce when they play! None of my previous dogs have done it before anyways!

Thanks to everyone who gave me advice. I'm still struggling to potty train him though, so if anyone wants to share their tips, i'm all ears. I tried puppy pads, I tried paper training him and even after takign him out so many times during the day, he still attempts to go in teh house and has accidents. I scould him and tell him no and then take him out and praise him when he's gone outside. I'm wondering if it's just the weather.....I've potty trained dogs before but he's a challenge. And I've never potty trained a dog mid-winter, not in a cold state anyway.
