Red River Rising... (11)

Just read that they are anticipating this to be a very bad flood along the Red River because of the heavy fall rains that saturated the river valley....
So just want to let those from Manitoba that I really hope that you are all able to stay safe and property damage is at the minimum or better yet, none!
The loss of soil nutrients off of fertile farm land and the loss of property and spirit...very concerning. Wish they would be able to really address and fix this annual problem.

The Red River has a habbit of flooding, every once in a while. Don't worry about the people too much. They have experianced this before, and are prepared for such events. The towns in the flood plain have ring dikes built around them, just for these flood years. 2 of the towns are starting to fill in the areas of the dikes, where the roads enter the towns. The farms in the area have dikes built around them or have their houses and other building built on mounds to keep them dry. Farmers are moving their machinery the top of their dikes. And the grain has been moved out. The pumps are checked over, the motor boats are also coming out of storage. (They have to get to town somehow) The towns are also getting their evacuation orders prepared. As for Winnipeg, the floodway (the big ditch) is partly widened and will be put to good use again. The sand bag filling machines are filling the sand bags by the 1000's, for the areas the need dikes built.

I live a long ways from the Red River (100 miles). And about a 100 feet higher. If I get flooded write Winnipeg off. The ancient lake agassiz will be back. Last Saturday ther was lots of snow, 2 days of warm weather, the snow is gone, and the river are in full flood. Around here we have a few roads washed out.

South of Winnipeg Some highways are closed due to water being on them. Some farms and houses are now islands. I believe all of the towns are have at least one road that is still open to them But the other roads into the town are closed with a dike over them. The main problem was thick hard ice that was slow to break up. That cause a few ice jams, which caused flash floods. Several houses that are normally safe from flooding got flooded that way. The ice cause a lot of damage to the trees along the river banks. Often shearing severl large trees at once. The big Floodway channal east of Winnipeg is getting used again. The flood crest will be reaching the south side of Winnipeg this coming week, I believe.
