It is with great sadness to hear the news from Italy.....an earthquake has hit the Abruzzo region in Italy early this morning round about 3.30 a.m. this local time.....
To date the dead count about 150 with close to 2,000 injured.....and about 100,000 displaced persons due to damage to homes.....
Latest news says that heavy rain and hail storms are hitting the area in these hours hampering the works by the Civil Defense.....
The city of Aquila has been hit and drastically damaged.....the historical old center has been totally abandoned and is in danger of total collapse......
Our hearts and prayers to our next door neighbors.....
Mother nature is a force one cannot reckon with...all we can do is take time to think of those who have lost their loved ones, their dwellings, their livelihoods. When tragedy strikes, it strikes us all, in a way. "There, but for the grace of God, go I." I am always saddened by such events and my heart goes out to those affected.
Italy is so prone to earthquakes. Many small/medium quakes regularly. I was in one in Perugia in '82, when several small Umbrian towns were damaged in varying degrees. But sometimes, they can be merciless. I have cousins who migrated to Australia after the severe earthquakes in southern Italy in the early 80's.
Let's hope it stops here for the dear people of the Abbruzzo. May they be protected.
Update........while the Civil Defence facilities are in full swing.....it is heartening to see the unity which such a disaster produces in an otherwise factional country.....
....entire villages.....historical artistic gems....and the historical centre of Aquila basically wiped out......the immediate emergency now is to provide temporary housing and meals to the innumerable homeless this earthquake has produced.....
.....heroic staff at the main hospital in Aquila who worked tirelessly to evacuate the building which was hit badly by the quake......in all over 350 bed ridden patients moved out and eventually transferred to other hospitals even down to Rome....
....highways have been closed to normal traffic and entire convoys of volunteers and supplies are begin moved into the area.....
....all communications failed and a network of radio amatuers were co-ordinated to liase with the civil defense......taking turns to pass on instructions and co-ordinating the entire operation until telephone service may be restored......

I was just watching Raitalia news. Parliament is fully united in this time of disaster. The rescue teams will be continuing their efforts to look for survivors under the tons of rubble. Being night time doesn't help.
