Hello friends... I am still alive but barely. If you haven't heard on the news, the area I live in was caught on fire. Barefoot Resort In North Myrtle Beach is where I live. There were brushfires in the area Wednesday, and the strong winds kicked the burning embers over to the resort. In fact our house was one of the 1st to catch on fire.
God works in mysterious ways. I woke my parents up at 1:00AM because I saw burning embers flying around outside...an amazing site. The embers caught any dry bush or dry mulch on fire immediately. 5 minutes later, the bushes were on fire in front of our house. It was burning so hot I couldn't go out the front door. The embers were like a blizzard...just flying everywhere. Me and my parents got out just in time. I saw a wall of fire accross the street consume a neighbor's house and our house was surrounded by burning bushes.
We literally escaped with our lives. We had no warning because the fire started so quickly. We were driving down the srteet with zero visability because of the smoke just honking the horn trying to wake people up, but the embers were catching everything on fire around us. We had to keep moving because we didn't know if the van would catch fire.
To make a long story short, we got out safely, but another few minutes, we probably would have perished. I took a final look at the house and thought it was going to be consumed by fire.
We were able to get back in the neighborhood yesterday expecting the worse. We drove down our street and by a miracle, our house was still standing. The neighbor next door lost his home, and accross the street from us, 4 more homes were completely destroyed. There were about 60 houses completely destroyed within a 2 mile radius of our home. Our house suffered some structural damage, smoke and soot damage, but it will be good as new in a couple of months. We are living in a hotel in the meantime.
I have so many stories to tell from neighbors and firemen I have talked to. One of my neighbors who is a good friend has been a "media star"..his name is Bob Porteus and he lives accross the street from us. He lost everything and when the media interview him, his attitude is so graceful, the town has fallen in love with him.
It was so heartbreaking to see the destruction, but so beautiful to talk to people and their attitudes were upbeat. It was amazing to see homes completely destroyed, and house next door was safe. There were no injuries or loss of life which is incredible in itself.
Me and my parents are very shaken, but we will be ok. We consider ourselves very lucky and blessed to be alive. I just wanted to alert everyone here who knew where I lived and tell the we are ok. God bless you all and take care.
Thank God Ken. We've been praying for you. I'm just so glad you are all okay. I know the heartbreak of a home lost by fire as my grandparents lost everything when I was 18. You will all stay in my prayers, dear friend. All my love. -d
Thanks for letting us know you are okay. I can understand what you are going through. I had to leave my home in California when the fires burn close to us. I lost a home to Hurricane Katrina and anothre one to Hurricane George. The days and weeks ahead can be tough. Keep the faith!
Ken when I heard about the fire you were the first person I thought about. I am so grateful that you and your family are doing well. Lela started a thread about the fires in SC and you. Take care friend.
