I was getting a cart at the supermarket and there was another woman doing the same but someone had left the store circular in her cart. She took it out and threw it on the ground even though there was a trash receptacle right next to her. I said to her "Excuse me, but there is a garbage can there". She looked shocked but she picked it up and put it in the trash can. I felt bad that I had embarrassed her but I'm hoping that she won't do it again in fear that someone else may approach her for throwing trash on the ground.
On the way to work this morning I needed a cough drop. I didn't have the heart to throw that little piece of paper out the window so I set it aside and when I stopped for coffee I took it with me and threw it in the garbage can.
Yesterday morning, when I pulled into the parking lot at work, there was a Coke bottle standing upright on the white line of a parking space. I could tell that someone had it in their car and when they were finished with it they set it down on the white line. That bottle is still in the same spot this morning.
The world is not our personal trash can.
When you walk on the beach or on soft ground your footprints will eventually disappear. But when you leave your trash anywhere but in a trash can, it will not disappear.
Yes, a piece of paper will eventually break up and waste away and that piece of chewing gum will stick to the tires and eventually break apart but when you throw your garbage out the window as you are driving down the highway, the plastic items in the bag will not break apart. The styrofoam container that your burger was in will be around for.....well, almost eternity.
Our ocean bottom is being cluttered with trash that people throw off their boats. Our highway grass is cut but what difference does it make when it is cluttered with garbage.
The Girl Scouts practice "leave it the way you found it" assuming that it was pristine when they got there.
When you go camping, hiking, to the beach, a concert stadium, or the mountains, do you throw your trash in the proper receptacle or do you try to hide it.
If you were on a picnic and the baby needed a diaper change would you take it home in a plastic bag if there wasn't a trash can or hide it under a rock.
When you walk your dog, do you take a plastic bag with you to pick up its poo or leave it for someone else to worry about.
Do you recycle your plastic bottles, newspapers and cardboard or do you throw them in with your household garbage?
Do you discard your battries the proper way.
When you change the oil in your car, do you throw it in the woods, in a drain or do you take it to an auto shop.
When you buy a six pack of soda or beer do you cut open each circle of the plastic around it so that the birds don't get caught in it when it goes to the landfill.
Would you throw the paper cover on a straw out the window. It's such a tiny piece of paper and the rain will dissolve it but what if 6 billion people all at the same time threw a straw cover out the window of their car.
Do you feel a responsibility to take care of Mother Earth or is it easier to say, what the heck, it's only a piece of paper.
Perhaps I am blowing it out of proportion, worrying about a gum wrapper on the street. After all, it will eventually disappear when it rains. But the rain won't dissolve all the garbage and the sun won't melt those plastic bottles.
Some people manicure their lawns to perfection and there isn't a weed to be found but when they get in their car and stop for a snack along the roadway, they don't give it a second thought to throw their trash out the window. If someone threw it on their lawn they would be angry. Why doesn't it bother that person to throw trash on someone else's property. The earth is your property. Why is their yard more important then yours.
Are you leaving your footprint only in the sand or in the environment of others around you.
My practice is, "Take nothing but pictures and leave nothing but footprints".
Just as easy to keep the garbage in a bag in your car till you get home and can throw your trash away. It bugs me to see people flicking cigarettes out their windows. Isn't that why they have ashtrays?
Snuggs, I'm like you. I will put the gum wrapper in my pocket until I have a trash can handy. I have a garbage bag in my car so that I can dispose of all trash easily. I have been known to go to a park with gloves and plastic bags and clean it up. My 2nd husband and I used to do that with the boys when they were young, so we taught them that value as well. I do not litter, and hate to see others do it. Yes, I've said something to others when I see them do it.
I cut those plastic things up so that not only the circles are open, but the whole thing is open. I recycle, and have even taken home the water bottles from my sons' basketball teams games since the school they played for doesn't recycle them.
I do my best to leave my footprint only in the sand. Respecting the Earth and all life on Her is a core part of who I am and the lifestyle I live, as well as my spiritual beliefs.
You know what really solidified that for me? That commercial in the 70s and 80s with the Native American man with the tear rolling down his cheek. Whoever created that commercial did a really good job, as did the actor in it. It was very powerful, and affected a couple of generations.
We have way, way too many things in common, I think. A personal pet peeve for me is in my church, where they allow coffee etc. in the worship area. At the end of service, there are alway's paper cup's, water bottles, and bulletines left on the seat's or the floor. I hate it when the Lord's House gets treated like a land fill.

Lack of manners whether it be church or not. It is just common respect you should clean up after yourself.

That's what I was saying....that those people will go home and manicure their lawn and give no thought to leaving their garbage left behind for Him to clean up. Oh, I know....a miracle will make it disappear
wixomwizard: I agree, there seems to be a prevelant lack of respect for people and property today....just a lack of respect for anything in general, really.
Yeah it is so different today as too when I grew up even.
I know my children will still have friends over that will leave wrappers around the house and things like that, generally not pick up after themselves.....................yeah not in my house, it usually only takes them staying a couple of times for them to get the gist that I wont tolerate that sort of stuff. I would be mortified if I found out any of my kids stayed at someones house and didn't pick up after themselves.

No problem...I was off topic too with that Vinny guy
