The other day I watched a program on an Austrian channel about a group of guys from Croatia who were arranging marriages for convenience. One of them was a legal resident in Austria and owns a bar there, married to a local woman.
They filmed an attempt of an Austrian woman marrying a Croatian guy, but the authorities caught on and the contract wasn't finalized. (Maybe the TV crew gave them up ... they said they wouldn't film, but did anyway).
Long story short, marriage for convenience is illegal in every country I can think of. Now the question is: Should it be illegal? If two people decide to marry so one or both can economically benefit, then what's wrong with that? Isn't that oftentimes what marriage is about anyway? or at least what marriage turns into after some years when the love and passion are gone?

I guess I am hoping to find someone thats my soulmate, if you have that the love and passion doesn't end, its when you marry for convenience that you don't have the basic platform you need to make a relationship work, it is what it is convenience. I truely don't see it as a lasting relationship in convenience type relationships, I've been known to be wrong before

Of course that's what everyone wants... the fairy tale that everyone starts out with and that for 50% (the divorcees) didn't work out. Not trying to be pessimistic or say it doesn't or can't happen, but methinks that the odds are slim of finding the perfect match.
People used to and still marry for convenience, esp. in wealthy circles. Not much different from arranged marriages either in principle. If both are citizens of the same country, the authorities don't even care. Lately I'm thinking that it isn't such a bad idea ....

Well I know from my experience the second time around it does seem like a needle in a hay stack proposition, I don't know maybe we were all given one needle but you'll find me swimming in the haystack looking all the same googles and snorkle set for a long swim
It seems that marriage is the only way for two people that are "connected" to enable them to remain in some countries unless of course one of them has a lot of money to be able to explore other types of visas
Ah, the eternal optimist. Perhaps we should call you "Nemo"

Witchaywoman: Maybe people would get married for convenience and stay married because they like each other. Tee-hee!
You know, that's not such a bad proposition really. Passion and excitement fades rather quickly. Few can say after 5 or 10 years that things are still as exciting as they were in the beginning. Starting out with "liking" the other and knowing there's at least not going to be any fighting over a lack of money doesn't sound all that bad to me.

Precisely. What do you think about hooking up even if there is no "connection" per se - strictly for the economics of it?

i agree with you that it's a bit hypocritical on the legal side. but most laws are anyway, at least in terms of their execution.
