My little Shih Tzu has an itchy neck all the time. I know she has allergies, but when you scratch her little neck the foot starts a-going. Do you think it is anything to worry about?
Thanks friend! I came through a lot of different information and I finally decided to call the vet.
The vet said that little doggie would benefit from benedryl!
Who knew? I knew she had allergies, but it had actually manafested itself to itchy. So, based on her weight and what the vet said, I gave her 1/4 of a cap of plain benedryl once every 8 hours for one day.
Once she was over her initial allergery reaction, I was able to drop that dosage down to once every 12 to 24 hours depending on how she was feeling. It's all good! :)
So happy to report it, but for all who read this, please call your vet first and tell them the weight of the dog and what the problem is before you administer medication.
This remedy worked for me, hopefully it will work for you or at least get the dialog going with your vet! :)
I am happy to report Miss Penney is doing much better!

Another thing you may want to try is to put wild alaskan salmon oil( 1/2 capsule) on his food. It lubricates the skin which can really dry in the summer. I use it for my long haired cats.

Good Choice....A lot of animals have food allergy. Dogs need meat not corn...

And fish oil has the essential Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids that dogs need. You also might want to consider switching to a human-grade dog food or feeding raw. That's what I do. My dogs eat chicken backs or chicken quarters with minced garlic (flea elimination) and fish oil capsules. Twice a week I add an egg.
No allergies, no skin problems, no tartar on their teeth, no ear wax build-up, and no dry skin. We only go to the vet for regular check-ups and the occasional vaccine. (Not on the schedule my state demands, but on the one that is healthy for them.)

I have found two very good dog foods for my retrievers..Orijen and Innova. There are many dogs that have food allergy the Vets will tell you grass allergy and give the animals Predzone shots any other shots that will not solve the problems and can hurt the immune system.

This is why I go to a holistic vet. He understands well that I wouldn't dream of giving something to my dogs that I won't take myself.
I'm not familiar with Orijen, but I've heard of Innova. My one girlfriend feeds Blue Buffalo.
I've noticed that the list of available human-grade lines available has increased, which is cool. If more people knew what went into normal dog food, they wouldn't buy it. It's gross, and despicable, personally. But then, many humans don't care what goes into their own food, either, so maybe not.

I have some of that! Cool! Thanks for the hint, I will give it a try!

Wow. Awsome, Dru. My girls are getting something called "Nutro, Natural Choice - Lamb & Rice." It is pretty expensive, but they usually do pretty well on this. I will tell you, I really don't have the money to do what you are doing, but you are certainly a good mom to your Pup(s). That is now 2 vots for the fish oil; guess I better do it! Thanks for the hint!
Wow! You folks are great! :) I really appreciate that you took the time to tell me your thoughts to help me with my little baby. I am sure the girls thank you too!

Actually, it costs about the same as a premium dog food. But it does take prep time, and they have to be fasted before the switch. And the expense does depend on how close you live to a good source for the chicken. Right now, I can get it at a reasonable price, and have a few options for doing so that are easily available.
But to each their own. Yes, at least add the fish oil. Salmon oil is the best, but it's expensive. I get fish oil capsules from Wal*Mart, they're cheaper and still effective.
There not fleas right? if not go with what everyone else is saying.....

Thanks man. I called the vet and asked about Predzone and they said it was a steroid. I elected to try the benedryl first. I don't know the brand of foods you are speaking of, so I don't think they are available in my little bitty town in the Pacific NW! Yikes! Good advice though, and I thank you for your thoughts!

Good one, Dru! I actually looked at what was in the stuff before I bought it. It seemed to be pretty okay, but it is always good to be reminded of what we feed our four footed friends! Thanks for the thoughts! :)
azucarmorena: She has hotspots most likely. Organic Apple Cider Vinegar does wonders!
visit earthclinic.com for more info. These dogs are prone to skin allergies and frequent bathing will dry out the skin and exacerbate the issue.
Hotsponts. I have not heard of this darlin'. Good call! I will look it up, and if these other things don't help, I will give it a try! :) Thanks for your thoughts! :)
