I didn't know they're called beds. Learnt something new here. I'm talking about those plastic fold outs that come with or without a cheapish foam padding. They're usually put out by hotels that own a bit of private beach.

Sorry if I come across as a bit upset, but this type of petty behavior I just cannot understand.

It's the actual hotel beds in your room that really count.

I always drape some item of clothing over my bed just in case some crazy German breaks into my room and tries to claim my bed!

RobertC2: Some are quite nice!

To tell the truth, if I find a really, really, really nice German wench draped across MY bed in MY hotel room........ I don't complain too much!

Robert, I think any wench draped across your bed would be a good idea laugh

I doubt that would work here... Spaniards are not conforming to rules such as "first in, first served..."

If there is a spot and it can hold two, there will be two. If you know each other already, good for you, if not - you got a new friend laugh

I was on holiday in Portugal once and a couple used to put their towels on "their" chairs by the pool the night before. Let me add that they were British.

After a few drinks one night I staggered out to the pool and took the towels off, but refrained from throwing them in the water. Unfortunately I was spotted by the guy in the room next to the couple. He gave me a wee wave as I walked back. I should have felt quite good, but I felt guilty for some reason. Well, the husband was a bit of a monster. Maybe it was fear that he found out, rather than guilt.

I was in another hotel in Portugal, and the pool was run by an old woman who was a bit of a tyrant. But, she wouldn't let people "reserve" chairs. That was execellent as there is nothing so annoying as being faced with a sea of chairs and towels at the pool, but no one sitting on them until after midday.

The TC idea is a good one in my opinion.

expat2be: To be honest, I have seen only German a**hole do the towel thing. But I had no problem with it as I always threw their towels away and blamed the wind

It has always been a running joke with my cousins in Spain, that the Germans “CLAIM” the poolside chairs late at night for the following morning, then never turn up until 11 am.
He used to go round at 6:30 when he was cleaning the pool, collect all the towels and place them neatly in the bar area.
I would have to agree though that the Brits are now following the German trait as they got so pissed off at losing out on the sunniest chairs each morning.

Gosh, you guys should try Italy .... they got MILLIONS of deck chairs!!!! The entire beach is lined with them ... all cute, with their own umbrella. But at 15 euro a day I think they are ridiculous.

I love nothing better than being down at the waters edge, stretched out on my towel, when I`m not in the water ..... The sand is more accomodating to ones body shape, and more relaxing, plus you can shape your "head pillow" to whatever suits you!

I call pay beaches "plastic beaches" - cause one is only paying for all the pink and purple plastic "improvements"!

Yes, your host country is lovely for a short holiday. My only problem with Italy is ..... they are incapable of filling a cup with coffee! If it`s an Espresso cup, its half full. If its a normal size cup, its half full. Once before I took 2 weeks of frequenting the same coffee shop every day to finally get the lady to FILL the cup! This time I only went once to a dinner invitation, and afterwards asked for a BIG CUP OF COFFEE .... and got a Big Cup with a few drops of coffee in the bottom somewhere! The man must have thought I got a fixation on a Big Cup?

They make such delicious coffee, but I got to ask for 8 coffees and a Big Cup and then pour it all into the cup to get a decent size drink!grin

The Italians are a lovely vibrant people. So charming. It`s the only country where I find old men smile at me so charmingly - usually old guys reserve those smiles for only young ladies.

Next time you're in Italy, order a “doppio espresso supplementare di acqua calda con latte freddo”, basically it's a strong coffee with extra hot water and a splash of cold milk, but it is somewhat closer to a decent sized cup of coffee, I also found it hard to justify the tiny coffee that just about dirties the cup, now my local bar makes the above as soon as I walk in, I got them to write it down for me so I could get the same at other barsinnocent
