I applaud President Obama's efforts for public health-care. I'm a 64 year old Canadian who has benefited from our universal health-care system since 1963 when it was enacted.

Despite the conservative negative ads (Re: Canadians and our health-care) running on U.S.,TV at present;

Have I ever had to wait to see a specialist ? No.
Have I changed doctors without a problem ? Yes.
Have I ever received less than the best care in a hospital ? No.
Have I ever had to wait more than 4 weeks to see a psychiatrist ? No.
Has it cost me one dollar ? No ?
Do I pay 65% less than Americans for prescription drugs ? Yes.

Countries with universal healthcare: Argentina, Austria, Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Chile, China, Cuba, Costa Rica, Cyprus, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Iraq*, Iceland, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Oman, Portugal, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Spain, Sweden, South Korea, Sri Lanka, Ukraine and the United Kingdom.

If I were an American, given my past circumstances, I would not be alive to write this. Despite Canada's harsh climate, we live longer than Americans. Why ? Free health care.

Paws, I agree that free health care would be wonderful...but then, most of the countries you've mentioned have also put strict regulations on herbal supplements and alternative therapies, making them harder to access. I'm afraid that would happen here, and it's not right. Why have we fought it so far? Because there's always been restrictions of our rights included in the bills for it...and we don't like to have our rights restricted.

Now, if they can offer the free health care and leave alternative/natural/holistic medicine alone, and not take away any of our rights with it, I wouldn't mind it at all.

And another reason we don't like it? If it's not good enough for our president and government employees, why is it good enough for the rest of us? We usually decide something like this stinks to high heaven in some way if that's the case.

Yes, but we have a diet filled with lots of sugar, refined carbs and grains, processed foods with tons of additives, chemicals and poisons...and a high rate of smokers. When people change their lifestyles we'll see a decrease in these. And yes, it's that simple.

Yes, but here in the US, that bill would still pass...not enough here care, J.D...and I'm not saying it's a bad thing, just explaining why people here fight it. And our politicians don't back down, they sneak things in behind our backs. mumbling

Trust me, if it gets too bad here, I'll expat there as soon as my sons are grown. I'm getting very fed up with our politicians. sigh

It's my understanding that they tried (unsuccessfully) to pass laws restricting the sale of herbal supplements, and making you have to get them through your doctors, just like England has now. Again, it's why I admire Australia and New Zealand...your countries have enough people who are awake, aware, and willing to fight your government. The US is full of "sheeple" more than people still...and they're waking up way too slowly. Funny, though...Obama seems to be wakening the masses finally...disappointment in "the messiah" is making many see the light. Finally.

Sorry to tell that it is in the passing or has been passed at this time already. Check it out. The PHARMA want to continue getting rich treating symptoms and never the real disease.

No such thing as free health care nimwit. not to mention, 95% of americans who want health care, have health care. This is just one more way that governments control the people. Getting them dependent on government. Nothing the government has been in control of has ever worked correctly; I.E. Post office, social security, amtrak. What makes anyone think that we'll get better health care when the government hijacks it? Not to mention, all you canadians come down here to get all surgeries you're "free" health care can't afford.

I think it's a bit of a double-edged sword when it comes to herbal supplements. There are some real quacks out there who will sell stuff that's actually dangerous, ranging from Vitamin overdoses to certain concentrated extracts in combinations that shouldn't be taken if a person has either an illness or if there's a risk of it affecting meds you have to take.

My experience here is that people are more likely to use herbal therapies and non-traditional approaches than in the US. In fact, the docs I've talked to since here tell me that we tend to shoot flies with atom bombs (i.e. overuse of antibiotics, etc.).

So far as I know, no insurance company today covers herbal stuff or holistic medicine as it is, so whatever this new health care bill looks like, I'm sure it won't cover A.M. either.

There's a lot of misinformation in the US about health care in Europe aka socialised medicine and the motivation for this misinformation is political and financial. Sadly the people don't have any way of knowing just how much they're lied to.

I contracted with a German health insurance company even while living in the US, for very good reason. German law does not allow an insurance company to cap your lifetime entitlements. Capping lifetime entitlements is akin to saying: if you can't pay past your entitlement, you'll just have to die. There are other differences, but you get my point.

Did you know that the US doesn't allow foreign insurance companies to offer their services in the US? They are in essence preventing competition (doing just the opposite of what the free market they want). That in effect dooms a lot of people to being bled for health care premiums and cost of services.

It truly is a pitiful state of affairs ... I want to read this new bill. Methinks that by the time it hits the market, it'll be so watered down that it'll benefit only a very small segment of the population. The insurance industry is simply too powerful and politicians too corrupt.sigh

No. I seen them waiting quite a while to get treatments and appointments. I saw very young semi-skilled doctors. I saw over crowded hospitals. I saw a lack of doctors and specialist.
