Ideally, what system of government (and don't just say "capitalism" or "communism", but describe your own particular vision and reasons for believing that this system is best) do you think would work best in our country?

good thread it deserves a reply
i would create a socialist republic a true socialist republic not the type of socialism that is preached by the labour party which in reality is not socialist
to start with all industry and all our resources would be nationalised including the financial sector and agriculture
ireland has alot going for it sadly we have had nothing but
inept self serving governments this is partly because of the civil war politics that existed here and still does to a certain extent where people vote party instead of policy
the profits of all our industry be distributed fairly to the workers
and to improve services such as health and public transport, we would all pay higher taxes and get away from this low tax no services state we have now
all public buildings would fly the irish flag i was on the road there a few months ago passed a school it had an eu flag but no irish one disgraceful
irish would become our primary language again and all citizens would be given free lessons
it would be as much a cultural revolution as it would be a socialist revolution

personally politica must change to suit the situation we find ourselves in...ie.. capitalism fine durring a boom time, but now a need for equality and share the wealth attitude must be adopted or our country will divide up more than it already has between the has`s and the has nots...gap needs to close!!..jmo

on a grand scale i believe ireland should go it alone...out of europe form bank links thru the dollar, sterling and swiss franc if possible..
a deep sea offshore port at an enormous cost to us..but to take the market for container shipping thru our port and onwards!!
(its a 20billion a year bussiness)...

thru the losc(law of sea comittee) we in march 09 gained un-rivalled continental shelf real estate(porcupine bank)..we need to agressively explore this new area(on our own..no shell)
only bout circa 100 yrs before oil/gas option is not needed...

the port again would be invaluable for this reason also!!

it all sounds pie in the sky! but these are to secure our futures
economically FOREVER!!!

(now everyone go call me nuts!!...lol)

when boom time happens its usually thru the banks and stock markets and filters down so a cpitalist system works then..imo
only exception really is the chinese but its the shear volume of cheap product flooding the market that creates there power in money terms... we ..the lil people must tow the fat cats line in order to prosper,in those times of boom!!

that said..now is not one of those times so a need to start again on an even keel is needed...

all govt spending freezes on NOW!! all cash into health/education and housing!
as tony benn (rip) said... "" giving a people a home, health and an education without financial burden, is not a priviledge but an absolute must and necessity, for a nation to rise up and control its own destiny!""

well the way i see it with a socialist government there would never be a boom but a gentle simmer capitalism is all about boom and bust the worker is the last to get the benefits of the boom and the first to feel the effects of the bust

A democratic system that is managed like a business and is ultimately answerable to the stock holders i.e us.

Government ministers and td's to be employed by the people and have a full job description assuming they have the necessary qualifications and proven track record to get the job..

There will be no job security and ministers will have temporary contracts, should they fail to get the job done they join the lines out side the social welfare office.

There will be no more state visits unless it can be proven it is in the interests of the public.
The army will be sent out on the streets to reduce crime/wage war on the gangs.

People on social welfare will be placed in jobs in struggling businesses, managed properly it will save jobs and up-skill the work force.

And finally mary harney will be caged and put on display in the zoo as a warning to the rest of those idiots.

Personally, I like the idea of a Meritocracy but I have no idea how you would value an individual. You couldn't use money as a mesure as my system would value a nurse above a lawyer and a home help above a banker. It really would be a difficult one and I should really have thought this through before I posted!doh

Jaysus, that's so simple and straight forward it's brilliant but you can bet your bottom dollar that certain people with certain political allegances would find a way of running their businesses constantly close to the edge to avail of cheap labour.

But I like your thinking and I would vote for you in the hope it would work!ireland
