I dont think its a breakdown of family units (thats prob where i differ with you) but down to alot of other things.

Too many youngsters having children for the wrong reasons and dont know or dont want to really look after.

People are having children as it is a easy option of income (the more kids they have now, they more money they get)and they are getting paid very well here in nz.

Too many on drugs and out partying, not giving a damm about their kids.

Suppose living in a small community i see alot of what goes and it is very common and there not alot an indivual can do which is heart breaking, sometimes you just wanna take these kids home but lifes not that simple.

I have always thought, dont give benefits to some parents (they know who they are) but government should maybe cover their rents, provide the food so the children are getting it and clothing etc.

Seems to be some parents, just get the money which all goes to booze & drugs and children get nothing but thier ticket to parents easy living.

Other reason, is custody battles between parents.

Dont get me wrong, there are lots of good parents on benefits that do look after and provide and love their children.

But something that did come to light was i was speaking to a local grandfather couple of weeks ago who had his granddaughter of 2yrs with him.
He said, him & his wife went up north and pulled her away from his own daughter as the people she was hanging out with and the father were in a real bad enviroment, full of drugs etc and baby was in real danger.
He got custody of her thro courts and is now bringing her up(shes cute :)), It was a really nice to see a child that was actually saved by the grandparents stepping after seeing warning signs.

So at least i get a happy smile when i see them around town

JD and Tarnz, Im not really that up on the exact situation, I do know from speaking to my NZ friend that some horrific things are happening to the children and children are dying as a result.

Its heart and gut wrenching, I honestly dont think that there are any easy solutions. Your comments about younger mothers who arent coping would suggest that there needs to be more support, or education as part of their prenatal care.

What can I say, its just awful.
