Be very careful of online scanners, they are often spy software, only use a genuine antivirus suck as Comodo or Avara, google free antivirus and then access the sites directly not through a third party.

there's a decent site called cnet, they have loads of freebies, reviews and feedback so you can get a good idea of what's worth downloading

This is for Conrad too. Don't know if where you live makes a difference, but AVG went pay-only last year. I have always had AVG, (well for the last 8 years or so anyway). It will scan now but it will not get rid of anything you have on your computer unless you pay.. Why would I make a point of taking the time to say this if it were not true?

Sounds like that is a new version but what use is it, if it doesn't even protect against the basics?.....

It dose protect against the Basics,it's just the Candy you don't get.
But I use Firefox,NoScript.My AVG Resident Shield is turned off.
Also using MalwareByte's and usually scan with that.

I have Comodo on my main computer, and although my son (the expert) doesn't like it, I find it competent for what I want it to do as a firewall and anti-virus.

I've used this one and it found rogue files that were associated with ZLOB DNS changer which were plagueing me for a long time. Other anti spyware programs couldn't find them.
You might also check out F-Secure.

On line scanners have serious limitations.
I would get a good AV to run from your hard drive then scan in safe mode or if you have the ability download the WIN-UBCD, update the AV and anti-spy products, burn to CD or DVD then run that to scan your HD.
