Anyone in Amman, Jordan?? ( Archived) (7)

I will be going to Amman for a week in early October. Haven't noticed anyone from there on the forums, but perhaps I just haven't paid enough attention.
Anyone in Amman?
Any suggestions for thing to do (I won't make it to Petra, unfortunately)...good restaurants or places where a woman alone can be comfortable?

I'll tag along with you if you like!

I am going for a week-long training program, but am interested in suggestions for things to do in the evenings... nothing radical...just suggestions for what I might do on my own.

Amman has lots of things you could do/see and the taxis are cheap and absolutely safe.
It used to be called Philadelphia back in the ages!
You have to go to the souq in downtown and if anybody is telling you to stay away from downtown, don't listen!
It's such a stereotype that the tourists should not visit alone the parts of the city where the real , mid-low class Jordanians live ; and it's a shame, because you won't get to know the real soul of the place.
walk the streets, get the flavored coffee at the street vendors, buy nuts and sweets and bargain for souvenirs...
There is the citadel in downtown you have to see, which is the core of the old city, then you have the amphitheater,the great King Hussein mosque

There are great neighborhoods to hang out in the evenings - shopping, restaurants, clubs : Shmeisani, Abdoun, Jabal Amman...
But better not plan that; one thing about Amman is that places are changing constantly, every newly opened place, be it restaurant, club, terrace, mall...attracts the majority of city's social life for a while; then something newer comes along, so the place will eventually close down for luck of customers.

Jordanians are extremely friendly and hospitable, I am sure there will be many offering to drive you around and show you places.
