I was in the hospital recently...after 5 days in, I was released 9 days ago. I have veins that are very difficult to find and was jabbed a number of times in a number of different places on my arms and hands, where they tried to insert the I.V. The various bruises have mostly faded now, but my right hand (where they last had an I.V. inserted) is still very sore and tender, and I see tracings of a somewhat swollen vein or something...again, very sore.

Does anybody with any medical knowledge know if this is normal for some people and will go away in time? Or should I be concerned at this point?

Of course, I'll see my doctor very soon if it continues hurting. I won't just take advice from here. But if there are some here who are truly knowledgeable, I just wonder if this is something that happens often or should I seek more immediate attention than giving it a few more days.....??

If its still red and sore after 9 days, I'd get it checked right away. I'm no doctor, but Ive had my share of IVs and it shouldnt still hurt.bouquet

You have small veins probably and some of the needles they use are big. You are going to be sore, no doubt about it, along with bruising. I had a sore hand for quite a while, but my IV was in for four days. Hang in there, all in good time.wink

I wouldn't wait, best to get it checked, so many hospital viruses about, my son became badly infected after having his appendix removed, it was MRSA which they managed to treat successfully.

Personally i think you should contact your dotor straight away.
You may have an infection that undiagnosed could cause problems.Any advice your given on here could give you a false sense of ease and may also be a mis-diagnosis.

You know your body better than anyone else, if it doesn't look right, best to follow your gut reaction, what harm can be done by having it checked or reassured that it is normal

I have the same problem. They have to use a butterfly (baby) needle on me.
The last time I had a blood test, the guy stuck in the needle (very slowly) and didn't get a drop. His supervisor had to redo it. I had a blue knot on my arm as big as a bird's egg after. It went down in about 2 days. If it has been too long though, you should see someone for it because it may be bleeding inside.

Just my luck....I didn't know how to say "butterfly needle" in Greek! All I could say to the nurses was "it hurts! Stop!" laugh (of course, they didn't stop...they just kept pushing and prodding). Gotta work on my Greek medical terminology if I'm going to keep ending up in the hospitals here! (funny thing, though, since most of our medical words are directly from Greek!)

Might be a bit awkward trying to hold a laptop and type while someone is jabbing needles into your handlaugh

Better to maybe write down a few important words

Stop
Hurts
Pain
Dying
Get the fect away from me you vampire
Do that once more and I jab it in your balls etc etc

I failed to grab my laptop when my neighbors rushed me to the hospital! doh

laugh Just kidding with you...I have dictionaries, I use Babelfish Altavista translation online, and I have a lot of Greek friends I can practice with, but the words I needed at the time were not part of my vocabulary yet.

Thanks a bunch, Robert. I'm feeling much better, have been back to work since Monday, and am almost finished with the meds. Thanks for your well-wishes.
