It occurred to me in a very real sense last winter when sometimes I had no visitors for up to 5 days at a time due to the weather and their other ocmmitments.

I would like companionship in old age because I like to chat and laugh, but if it is not to be then so be it. I am happy enough with my own company and my many interests that keep me occupied.teddybear

Yes, Im thinking about it since I was 13. I thought anybody never will want to be with me. Even started to save up money for my lonely secures olg age laugh

But if seriously I would like to live together with my girl friends, which I know from university. It would be fun banana

No. Not until my daughter said that when she has got a child (or two): “Of course, Ma, you’ll come and live with us”. Well... after that I’ve understood that there are some people who don’t think that I’m as young as I think I am.

But even that didn’t make me to start to think about growing old alone. Am I too optimistic or just ignorant?

There is a difference, if we are alone or if we feel alone.I know that I'll not be left alone when I am getting old(I still feel young enough inspite of my age),because one of my children or grandchildren will look after me,I am sure. But does that mean I won't feel alone?
Even having a partner doesn't mean that we might not feel alone, and its more sad to be with somebody and feel alone than really be alone I think.

Hi...No, i do not think you are ignorant.....just very young at heart. Thinking about old age is a universal feeling...no matter what anyone says.... just some of us admit the feeling...others just kid themselves.

I am growing old alone and can highly reccomend it.Sure there are times I miss company, mostly going to bed and waking up alone, but these moments are short,a few seconds.

I eat and and drink and do exactly what I want, when I want, where I want,Im beholden to nobody but me.I do not have to fit in with anybody and that my friend is as close as you,ll ever get to true freedom.dancing

Well, I guess when you get to around MY age it begins to be a reality. I would not have chosen it, but seems it`s chosen me, so I just accept it - what will be will be.

Fortunately, I`ve learned to enjoy my own company, and I don`t feel loneliness like I used to. Like Donau says - if you happy in your own skin, tis better than being lonely within a partnership. I been married 3 times, and I was always lonely and alone. So now I`m alone, but not lonely anymore.

Really? I doubt it. There are people who don’t think about old age of a simple reason that they live here and now, not in the future. And thinking about yourself as old is to live in the future as if it’s guaranteed that one would live so long.

Oh I know you're right but the fact is that as you get older, you seem to attend more and more funerals and sometimes of people younger than yourself. It reminds of us of our own mortality and at nearly 49, I am in all probability around 2/3 of the way through.Like I say you become more aware. I certainly hope I don't die alone!(I don't mean I intend to take anyone with me!laugh )

If you don’t intend to take anyone with you, then you are deemed to die alone.

Is there any chance that you meant that you don’t intend to live alone until you die (alone)?

Nope - they mean that they don't want to take anyone with them when they DO die!
