Ok so my 17 yr old has his L plates he will be eligible to get his p plates in about 2 months christmas at the latest , I have 2 cars both registered in my name I want to give my old car VN holden commadore to him its reliable even tho its a 6 cylinder and big its a gr8 car goes really well!!!
My question is should I put the car into his name ,then rego greenslip etc or leave it in my name & name him as a driver?
Im gonna have to sort it out the cars due for rego!!!
I want the cheapest deal that still covers him properly
Ive let the comprehensive insurance slide on the holden & just have bomb insurance Its an older model ...
Any insurance saleamen out there?

Hi Kizz, wave
As far as I know experienced drivers normally get cheaper insurance, so it may pay to put it in your name. confused beer

Hi Kizzy,
My 21yo son has just bought his second ute. Due to his disgraceful driving record he can't get insurance. His father put the car in his name and insured it in his name. Not quite the same situation as yours but you will find the insurance is cheaper if you leave it in your name. You will need to name him as a driver and IF there is a claim and he's driving then the excess will be for example $900 instead of $400 had you been driving.
The potential problem with doing this is you're legally liable to pay the excess if he doesn't.
Cheers! wine

My mother put all my cars under her name until I turned 27 then at 27 I went to the insurance company with my mother and told them for the last 10 years even tho the insurance has been under my mothers name, they were my cars and I was the driver and now I would like to change it under my name.. There was no problem not only did they do it they let me keep my rating one. grin

yep i agree this is the correct one to do insurance for your son. thumbs up

I have both my sons as named drivers for my vehicle but for their own vehichles they have their own independant insurance.

The cost depends on their licence and how long have held, their infridgment notices and their age and also the type of car they are driving.

example, older son has full licence, heaps of infridgment notices, boy racer turbo flash car - he has full insurance but also pays a very high premium but at least he can still get insurance - the cost is high more for the type of car he drives and everything has been be declared about the vehicle.

younger son just has a small car - no turbo and his premiums are cheap even though he is still on a restricted licence.

Mistake alot of people make and think they are ok, is by putting their son/daughters vehicles in their parents names and if something happens, they then think they are covered.

Not the case as you might think you are covered but when times comes to actually making a claim - insurance companies arent stupid and go on alot of things.
eg. how many vehicles you have in your name etc and how often you drive them
so is best you name them as a driver of vehicle.

Also with insurance companies, if you get tickets, you actually have to notified your insurance company of those which can make a difference to your access or your premiums.

But for people that dont disclose, when comes to lodging a claim - you might find yourself not getting paid out, as insurance companies will use that against you as you need to update with them all time and disclose new tickets (speeding, not parking tickets )

This is in nz but i would say probably would apply or be similar to oz rules as well.

Sorry for the dribble but hope this info might be of value to others as well.

As alot of people might pay, thinking they are insured, but when comes time to make a claim = may find out otherwise, no.
