smoky: Name the most treasured objects of your childhood.
Why were they important to you?
Do you still have any of them?
What objects have comparable meaning for you today?
There were a few,but about the only one left is my Granddad's Harmonica. It is still working. Got it in 1958 when he died. Was surprised it was still around when I got back to CH. Not much of the other stuff I can think of after nearly 60 years. Funny, just the other day I remembered the Jew's Harp I was given by a Friend of the Family, and wondered what ever happened to it.
my memories ........ nothing else comes close to all those memories of sheer childhood abandon and wonderment....which i think we spend a life time trying to recapture...

Gee, I`m trying to answer my own question, and its not that easy!
When I think of "treasured objects" of childhood - I remember Fruit Trees!
I loved one particular big Apricot tree in our back garden, I built a tree-house in it, and lived in it on weekends - having warfare on the next door kids - who swarmed their apricot tree like monkeys, and we used the fruit as weapons, as well - well theirs was always mostly green which gave them tummy aches,(to my delight) and mine was big and juicy which made a more lasting impression as a weapon. They had fig trees too,so I could spy out when they werent around and go steal their figs, and plums, to supplement my tree diet.
Now, whenever I see apricots it brings back memories of those delightful days. But I`ve never seen a fruit tree as big as "my" apricot tree was!
Comparable meaning today?.. Dunno .... ... little punnets of fruit in supermarkets?
Another fabulous fruit of childhood was the Cape Gooseberry - it grew wild in lanes between houses and out in the veld. Nowadays its a sort of delicasy?
My childhood memories are similar to Smokys. The only difference is my favorite place to sit on where 2 cherrytrees.Ether they had cherries on them or not. But they really have been very badfor the rest of my life-after eating lots and lots of cherries just sitting on the tree,I can never be satisfied eating cherries. My children wonder whats wrong with their mother when they see me eating 2 kilos of cherries in short time and asking for more, since that wasn't enough, the 2 kilos wouldn't let me have this feeling I had sitting on those trees and eat cherries with or without worms in them. Didn't make any difference for me than, and it really did not do any harm, eating them with "meat" inside-nothing for vegetarian this cherries
