I wonder which approach is more likely to give us contentment and fulfillment in our lives.

When we live for the moment, we allow ourselves to enjoy experiences and people that we know are only temporary pleasures in our lives. We may have relationships that have absolutely no "future" but are amazingly wonderful for the present time.

When we look towards the future and base everything on what may lie ahead, or what potentially may be, we may miss something wonderful that is at our fingertips right this moment. We seek long term, we seek happily-ever-after, and we exclude those people and experiences which we know will not last for the long haul. There's nothing wrong with wanting something lasting, something long term....but what if this never happens? What if, by passing up the temporary relationship while in search of the long-term, we end up never finding what we seek and we've missed some great moments along the way?

Let me clarify one thing, though...by "temporary" or "fleeting", I do not mean one-night-stands. I am referring only to actual relationships...the whole nine yards of dating, enjoying being together, etc. But the relationship will clearly not last "forever", no matter how great it is at the moment. You know this, you understand this, and you don't intend to try to change the ultimate path that you know it will take. But you are happily enjoying every moment of this relationship.

Just tossing this out for conversation.

Listen!

I am NOT into casual relationships.

Life is, however, fleeting.

Honestly, I swear, I have great joy every single day of my life!

I help other people; it's kinda selfish because it makes ME feel good.

Sometimes I find love........... I never seek it, but it surrounds me and nutures me and makes me feel good.

Tomorrow NEVER comes.

Today is GOOD..... not in a silly way but in a GOOD way!

What more could I ask for?

I am wondering how you define "casual relationships." Aren't there some that are meaningful and special and genuine, yet are still not going to last forever? The word "casual" implies frivolity and a somewhat uncaring feeling, but this is not what I meant.
And, yes...today is good!

Live for the moment and enjoy it.

Take any relationship for the moment, as you never know what it may develop into.

The future is just that..... and something we have no control over, so why try..... It's the NOW that should be enjoyed.

RobertC2: .......It's a cultural, religious meme thingy - we should ALWAYS feel tremendous guilt if we enjoy ourselves in any way!

Well, I guess I'm not a part of that culture, nor do I practice this religion. I don't feel guilt about what I do, because I don't feel that I do anything worthy of such an emotion. If I should ever have a pang of guilt about something I'm about to do, I will stop myself and won't allow myself to go any further. Guilt is felt before the action is done, I believe. It's conscience, actually. And my conscience will stop me from doing something that would lead to guilt.

Hi Jlb,

Can't we combine both??

Is it not in our control to make our current momment become our future??

It is only by being with someone over a period of time do you discover whether you both seek the same things from each other & wish your future to be ever-lasting.. beer

Unfortunately, when I went to Youtube to check out what you sent, I got this response:

This video is not available in your country due to copyright restrictions.

But, to answer your post....
I agree, in concept, that we can sometimes make our current moment become our future, but my thread is meant more for those situations when you know without doubt that there will be no future...when you know that living for the moment is all that you have and all you ever will have with the other. "The moment" may go on for months, possibly even a year or more, but you know that the day will come when you must part ways.
Thanks for your reply.

See your question, now that is spelt out for me.. laugh

It really depends on how much you care for the other person & also the reasons as to why it is has to end.

If it is truely pure love, then I would want to be with them as long as I could and find a way of making it last as long as possible...

I would say that when you are young, you are looking for fun and enjoying life's experiences, so when break-ups occur, while still hurtful, you can quickly move on...

But as you get older, you want a longer commitment, (though accept not everyone does, we are all different), so are considering the type of future you want when looking for someone else, and find out the deeper feelings of a prospective partner, no matter how you meet them....though with some it will be purely fun at the time. devil grin

As to video, well another Eurythmics track, see if this one works

Live for the moment...plan for the future, but don't predict the result, because if it doesn't happen, you're setting yourself up for disapointment.

Also,If you need somebody in your life to be happy, then it isn't love,it's an ATTACHMENT ,AND an ATTACHMENT destroys your capacity to love.
