Well winter will soon be here and I will be sitting by the wood stove.

The other day though the tall crazy lady that shares the house comes up with, "Hey we ought to do some snow camping this winter!"

We are not talking about a nice cozy little cabin in the woods folks. We are talking about a tent and military surplus extreme cold weather clothing and sleeping bags.

EXTREME COLD WEATHER!

Gang, I have to let ice cream melt before I eat it or I get the chills. Camping in the winter does not sound like my idea of fun.

Maybe I'll go snow shoeing again this winter, MAYBE.

But camping in the dead of winter? I think not.

So what do you think? Frostbite or fireside?

I wrote the post mainly to tease her. When we were dating I came up to visit Christmas break one year and we went camping in the field behind their house.

It was kind of fun and easier to keep warm than you might think.

I love camping in the fall and early spring when it's chilly, having a big campfire, and snuggling up to stay warm. I don't know how I'd feel about winter camping, but I'd be willing to try it with the right man. hug

winter camping is very comfortable,if you're prepared.good sleeping bags,a radient heater ( i use a coleman white gas one, they have propane, but white gas has other uses) & not a huge tent.
remember,if's it's cold out,it'll never rain, not like the other seasons.
happy camping if you go, if you're ever plan on a winter trip, the moon river, ontario,ca. is a great place.

I've done it, for 5 days/nights in a lean-to in the winter here in Alberta. The temps were around -35 celsius (-30F), not too bad once you had the fire going and in your sleeping bag.

Personally, I wouldn't do it again, rather be indoors, staying warm and toasty.cool

Winter camped on many occasions when I was younger. Have no real problems with it now except for not having the time (or much of anyone to go with).

One of my favorite set-ups is a 'scout pit' where you dig a long narrow trench and get a roaring fire going in it. When the fire burns down to a layer of coals about 3 inches deep, you cover it with about 4-5 inches of dirt and roll out your sleepingbag/bedroll. Toasty warm in the coldest of conditions!

Have also used reflector fires in front of leantos as well as snow caves, spider holes, etc...

thumbs up

If we go we will just drive up to her parents and go up in the back field again. When the moon is full the view is fantastic.
