The man tipped to be Europe’s first president is already considering new EU taxes to fund the rising cost of Brussels and the welfare state.

Herman Van Rompuy, the Belgian Prime Minister, broke his silence before Thursday’s summit to choose the president — but only at a meeting of the secretive Bilderberg group of top politicians, bankers and businessmen.

Mr Van Rompuy’s contentious remarks were aired privately amid the grand surroundings of the Castle of the Valley of the Duchess near Brussels. The château hosted the talks on the Treaty of Rome in 1957 that launched the European Union.

His office released parts of his speech in which he talked of funding social welfare from new green taxes and went on to discuss “financing levies at European level”, which his spokesman said later was similar to Gordon Brown’s call for an international tax on financial transactions.

The funding of the EU was discussed further after his speech, according to Flemish newspapers, but his office refused to give more details. Mr Van Rompuy remains the favourite for the position of president of the European Council — other contenders include Tony Blair — to be chosen when the 27 EU leaders meet in Brussels in two days’ time.

Mr Van Rompuy’s Bilderberg intervention will alarm non-federalist countries such as Britain and Denmark, which have long opposed giving the EU tax-raising powers and breaking the link with national funding.

A President of Europe? Now what is the world coming to? But I guess we should have seen the writing on the wall when the currency issue was started, eh?

I don't know how all of you feel about this in Europe, but it's starting to sound like a "New World Order" to me...time will tell if that's a good thing or not. conversing

Worse stillis that the ex Prime Minister, Tony BlarBlarblar stopped the UK from having a referendum to decide our countries fate within the EEC, thus making way for him to try for presidency himself.
Rompuy has stated that if he become president him will abolish national flags and have just the European flag, he will have one currency and one national anthem.
This is not democracy this is dictatorship. eu or uk

Before we sink into the merky depths of skeptical paranoia.....

roll eyes

if the US is run by a system of Presidency...answerable to the two houses of representation......Congress and Senate......

....what is so scary of establishing an EU presidency system??

...would certainly entail much less executive powers then what the US president does.....but he would be the one voice for EU....

....makes much more sense then having a rotating presidency of short stints per country as we have now......

...me thinks.....

Because it means that the UK will lose her sovereignty, and that is something not many British people will take lying down.
The EEC has done nothing for the UK except drain us financially and made laws we have no chance of changing.

so would the French, the Italians i would think, certainly here, as most of the other EU members populations I would think....

...on the other hand...I do have to admit....that in the last decades....the UK seems to have followed more US-UK alliance way of doing things.....rather then the EU's......

From my observations the UK follows every law put in place by Brussels, to the letter, yet France, Spain and Italy seem happy to bend or even ignore EU laws if they don't like them.
The UK US alliance is very strong, thats true, when it comes to warfare, but I think thats about all, if it wasn't for the financial links between the two countries I think even the military alliance would be halved.

This is not democracy this is dictatorship. or
no, it IS democracy...it is a perfect example of democracy in action...governments can easily take over by swaying the masses....because after al, all democracy is, is mob rule....

Hi everyone...

I know Mr Van Rompuy looks boring, but we Belgians know him for a long time. In fact he is a poet, and quite like a funny monk.
He is very intelligent and a good listener. He could bring Belgium recently from a very deep conflict into a quite peacefull situation. Question is... will Belgium survive now he left to Europe... professor laugh wine

Were is the voice of the people? Our system offers both the Senate and House to be their voice...and to balance the Presidency. Also the Supreme Court.

....wooooohhhhhaaaaaa....

confused

wow....we sure have different perspective of the same event.......

uh oh

....and i seriously wonder....what is it....that makes Americans so capable of creating such paranoiac worst case scenarios......

....maybe I'm dumb.....or maybe I'm a dreamer....

but from my point of view....EU......my perception of EU is of doing things together rather then fight among ourselves...and build a better future for us and our peoples.....and it seems to have achieved a better life for them too...

certainly not a perfect institution by all means.....one shackling problem that the EU political structure was that the Presidency changes hands among the nations making part......

thus excluding any real form of long term structuring within the EU was never really undertaken....all countries in the EU depend on unified energy and environmental policies.......

...yes, we must build a unified inter border task force that can be active for intervention....such as the earthquake that hit Italy's Abruzzo....or other similar situation that arise over EU territory....in all major situations of natural disasters occurring over the last decade have all been handled by the individual EU countries armies....

and when our armies are out there some where beyond our borders....they're there trying to lend a hand to those people who need them.....

....not dropping bombs on them.......

....US is the superpower....why are you so paranoid that over this end things are happening that may be dangerous to you guys?

peace
