hey guys,

BDD is a thing that someone im talking to at the moment has a big problem with, she somedays looks in the mirror and gets depressed and breaks down over her appearance, and then will go into isolation for a few days and be non sociable with anyone..

so i was just wondering has anyone else got a friend or partner who suffers from this badly?? and how do you cope with it? cause once she gets it, im just ignored or days.. weeks even?? and it makes me feel then that iv done somethin wrong?! dunno

any help would be appreciated. thanks.

No experience with BDD specifically, but plenty of experience living with someone with mental illness. If she is depressed because of unrealistic beliefs, check out Cognitive Therapy. There's books in the library about it. If her depression interferes with daily functioning, personal relationships, or she has any suicidal thoughts, she needs a professional. You yourself can't fix anything, you can love, but her recovery is her own.

Excellent advice. I couldn't have added anything to what Joy has said here so well.

How sad for your friend. People with BDD seem to never be satisfied with their appearance no matter what. I'm not an expert on this by any means, however, from what little knowledge I do have on it, people with BDD seem to want to have lots of plastic surgery done so that their "finished product" is a vision in the mirror of what they so desire to be but will always find flaws and want to continually attempt to perfect what they perceive as a flaw or imperfection. Suggest to your friend to get some professional help. Even offer to hold her hand and walk thru the clinic door and most importantly, make sure you let her know she's not crazy when you talk with her about getting professional help. You're being there with her will bring her confidence if you do that for her.

I hope that helps a bit

I cant offer any advice as some of the others who have posted like Joy have really summed it up well.

It is obvious to all of us that you are a very compassionate & strong person , so dont ever doubt that you arent helping her because just supporting her is a major step.

You are both in my thoughts

Dont beat yourself up for nothing, continue to be supportive, you could try to help her to help herself by seeking professional help. Just know that you are not part of the problem but you could be part of the solution for her . You have a good heartteddybear
