I think that is where I differ greatly from yourself.
If I find someone I want to be with I will stop romantic intensions with others, (do not mind friends), but want to give the possible relationship its best shot, which in my view, is concentrating on it fully & not getting distracted by starting others.
Would seem to me that if an issue came up, rather than work it out, you could then fall back on the position that there is someone else in the wings, so just finish it.
Commitment is the key to those involved.
To your original question, I only say 'I love you' to the person special to me and my close family.
