Tulefel: I don’t get warm and full of good cheer because of Christmas, but there’s no grumpiness either.

I’m even worst that that – I’m a heretic. And I plan to sleep throughout Christmas time…

Christmas commercials don’t irritate me as I don’t watch TV. Pre-Christmas hysterical gift purchasing doesn’t affect me as I never buy Christmas gifts. And it’s rather pleasant with all light garlands around as it’s dark already at 4 pm here…

My beloved holiday is New Year night… then I will celebrate!

Tules,
I know it was not the intention, but your post made me sad. Ah well, tomorrow is another day....

Elley: Many decades ago my grandmother(maternal)lost so many children around Xmas time that she forever hated Xmas.Wouldn,t even have a tree.Personally I hate it,I get less income and higher costs, got four birthdays during the same month to buy for.Tis in my opi just one big insincere binge.

That is horrible for your grandmother. In my family, twas the month of October that was full of death and dying. We all dread it now. But yes, Christmas has become a time of binge, conspicuous consumption and crazed commercialism...

I try to put on a 'face' for the kids I teach...sigh...

Why? It wasn’t intention…hug

I’m from another reality, from a parallel world, from fourth dimension… The Orthodox church (and I’m supposed to be Orthodox by default) celebrates the event 2 weeks later than the “civilization”. My family, including my grandmother (who survived WWI, revolution, collectivization, WWII – Leningrad’s blockade, and few other like-wise unpleasant things) wasn’t religious, and hence I have no childhood memories connected to Christmas, but lots of pleasant memories about New Year night – the tree, gifts, guests, lights and music, and funny games, and surprises… and I’s allowed to be with them until I’d drop…danceline

And by any means I, that haven’t managed to have a vacation this year, need sleep.

gnite

I don't mind y'all hating Christmas - that's your right - but I don't think you should ban it for us folks wot love it!

I mean we adore Christmas round at our gaff, the deccies, the cooking, the little creches, the planning of parties and games and trying to find the words to The Twelve Dogs of Christmas... Midnight Mass and candles and mulled wine... the sheer joy of it all!

I already made my pudding and the cake, I've got the big presents sorted for family and the rest just lives in two large tea chests beside the freezer... so we don't buy that much actually. It's not a spending spree - just lots of socialising with friends and family, and singing in the choir on Christmas morning and planning secret surprises for each other... and holly of course. Must get into the garden and cut some holly...

Well, Christmas season here is lovely .... it breaks the monotony of the weather. We have the village Advent Calendar thingy where certain houses take turns each night to get all lit up with decorations and folk traipse around with their kiddies to see it - and the house-owners serve Aperos ... so from about the middle of December, each night there is something special to go look at...... mostly for the kids .... the adults go for the free Gluewein....and snacks.....

The restaurants with cellar pubs begin their regular live band entertainment that goes on till the early hours on weekends....

A week before Christmas is the Night Christmas Market with stalls all down the main road in the old part of the village .... Danish Candles burning with pots of hot herbal wine brewing ...... music ... Samichlaus and Schmützli make an appearance to hand out bags of nuts and apples to the kids .....everyone gets wildly drunk at the liqueur stalls who offer free sampling .......and we all supposed to buy our Christmas Gifts.

Christmas Eve is family dinner and gift opening.....

Christmas Day itself is for visitors to come eat, drink, and be merry .....

And then .................. the following week comes New Year and Sylvester .... my village has Fassnacht on the 2nd January where everyone dresses in fancy costumes (disguised), bands and floats make much noise thru the village...the pubs get crammed in the evening and get entertained by the bands who each enter every pub and play their music, and other buskers do various skits ......... and then everything winds down again.... until the weather warms up again......cheers

So, altogether ... Christmas is much nicer here in Switzerland than in my home country - here at least they don`t try and disguise the paganism, and its wholeheartedly enjoyed.

immanuelle: Oh my, oh dear....I was listening to online radio and just heard a Christmas carol (walking in a winter wonderland - no less).....I am sooooooooo irritated now!! I am a scrooge. I HATE Christmas and it has started.....32 days away

In The Netherlands we are in the midst of celebrating Sinterklaas and Schwart Piets...I should not (I repeat) should not have to endure both.....

(Sorry, but just another mindless thread from me)

So, who here is a Christmas person, get's all warm and sweet and full of good cheer and who just gets grumpy like me?
I agree that Christmas period is too long-starting in November. But I do enjoy Christmas because usually all my children and grandchildren can come and thats whats making those days special for me-to be together with my big family. If it was another opportunity, it would have the same meaning for me-its not the christmas itself, its the chance to have my whole family around me.
