On Saturday it was annouced that Roberto Mancini is now the manager of Manchester City, that now means that there are 4 Italians managers working in English football.
With Roberto Mancini at Macnhester City, Carlos Accelotti at Chelsea, Gianfranco Zola at West Ham United, and not forgetting Fabio Coppelo as England manager.
- So why are the Italians going to manage in English football?
- Do you think there will be more managers from Italy moving to England in the future?
- Can´t they find a job in football in Italy, as they are a big nation of football in Italy?
- Do you think there will be more Italian players playing in English now there are so many managers there?
feel free to write your view!

This makes me really mad ... I am a Manchester City fan, and I am disgusted at how the last manager was sacked on Saturday - apparently Mancini was offered the job and accepted on Dec 2 !!

And Mancini cannot even speak English, which I would have thought was a "given" for a squad containing serveral Englishmen and Irishmen, as well as the usual big money imports ...

Yours sincerely,

Disgusted of Manchester

Glad to see another football thread mate! thumbs up

I think the Italians are much more in the 'chess' aspect of the game, while also being more disciplined, and that gives them an edge when it comes to management.

For the past few years, many of the top clubs have had Italian fitness coaches as well, and you can see the effect this has had on English football in general. Players no longer go onto drinking sprees, eating junk food etc after a game.

I agree with you that Mancini wouldn't set my enthusiasm alight as a coach. During his 4 year stint as Inter manager, he won the leagues 3 times with Roma always finishing a close second. Despite the fact that Inter's transfer & wage budgets were always 4 or even 5 times that of Roma, Inter also usually lost the direct encounters against Roma, but they used to edge Roma in the league due to the fact that Inter had enough players to field 3 class squads, while Roma just had to do with 14 good players with the rest of the squad not being anything special.
Hence the grind of season injuries, bans etc would see Inter edge forward.

Re-Mancini not speaking English, this is not such a handicap as it may seem at first sight. There have been plenty of managers who have led teams successfully despite not speaking the local language (though if he's there for the long haul, most managers do make an effort to learn the language).

Just to cite some famous examples, Bobby Robson coached Sporting Lisbon & Barcelona (especially in the latter, English is not spoken widely by the locals); while Capello's English wasn't exactly up to par when he first coached the England national team.

If you remember, 2 of them titles that inter won was practically given to them.
The first title was given to them when Juventus was relegated for the match fixing scandal, and they had there title remove and was given to Inter.
The second title Juventus was playing is Seria B and Ac Milan were docked many points and i think a few other teams were, so there were no other team that was going to win that other than inter.
Fair play in the third title they won all teams were pretty much level.

I am Man Utd fan, and the former Manchester United player (sparky) Mark Hughes was doing a fine job there i think, They only had 2 defeats this season one to Man Utd in the last minute and the other to Tottenham at White hart lane, losing 2 games at this point of the season is not a sackable offence.

You're right about the 1st title, Inter got handed that to them after Juventus got relegated (but that's hardly Inter's fault that Juve cheated).

The 2nd title was a close battle to the finish. Roma made a great late season comeback, and till 30 minutes from the end of the last match they were virtual champions. Inter won the title as Ibrahimovich found a late brace to give them a 2-0 win away at Parma, enabling Inter to win it by a 1 point margin; so it was hardly a walkover season.

The 3rd title Inter were pretty much the class of the field. Juve kept pace for most of the season, but their form faltered in the last couple of months, enabling Inter to win the league with a couple of games in hand.

I agree with you here mate. Sadly, I think that the English Premier League is losing (if not lost already) that unique factor that a manager was allowed years in which to build his team.

Sacking managers after a handful of games was more a characteristic of Serie A & the Liga. The advent of the big money spenders is having the positive effect of brining in the world's best players to the EPL, but at the same time the pressure to deliver results immediately is also mounting.

I sincerely doubt whether Sir Alex Ferguson could do a repeat of his career if he was starting his career today for example. If I remember correctly, in his first 5 years leading United, he didn't win a single trophy.

Sir Alex Ferguson is the best manager in English football - with a 23years stint, with 11 Premier League titles, 5 FA Cups, 4 League cups, 2 Champions Leagues titles, 1 European super cups, and 2 world club cups. There is not alot of managers that stay in a club for 23years and my opinion the way that football is now that will never happen.

Lets look at another manager - Arsen Wenger for Arsenal he has enjoy 13 year stint, he has not won as much silver ware as Sir Alex, but he is still in the job. Arsenal have not won a trophy since last time they won the FA cup, beating Man Utd on penalties in the final in 2005. he has won 2 premier league titles, I think 3 FA cups, and they got to the champions League final in 2006 in Paris, which they were beaten by Barcelona.

Wenger also has a talent which puts him way above all other managers. He manages to find talented kids from all corners of the world and turn them into world class players with an uncanny regularity.

The fact that Arsenal haven't won any trophies lately is more due to the fact that they always play with 'kids' and once they mature into complete players they are sold off; a bit like Ajax Amsterdam used to do in the 90's.

I beleive the problem in English Football is that clubs like Man City are being owned by very rich and ambitous (For sure that's not a problem), but they need experienced coaches that coached winning teams and teams that played the Champions League. Since the only 3 really succesfull coaches in England are Ferguson, Wenger and Benitez are already taken, clubs like Chelsea and Man City had to look around. Spanish succesfull coaches don't exist. Now there is Guardiola but he's taken by Barca, and Mancini and Ancelotti were available. Zola had a gd knowledge of the Premier and Capello everywhere he coached he won silverware mentioning clubs like A.C.Milan, Real Madrid, Roma and Juventus. With all this teams won the Championship and also the Champions League with A.C.Milan back in 1994. And the Coverciano Coach Academy is renowed to be the best coach academy in the world.

I agree with you. The way he has been treated was disgraceful, and very "un-City".

Sparky's target at the beginning of the season was a top 6 finish. He is / was on course to acheive that.

This target was apparently "re-negotiated" recently, not for a position finish, but for a total points haul of 70 points this season. He is/ was on course for that also. The CEO Gary Cook felt that the target of 70 points was NOT going to be acheived, and hence Sparky's removal. Remember that Hughes was already in place when the new owners took over, and was not "their man"...

City are in the semi final of the League Cup for the first time in twenty something years (against Man United !), first leg in January. Hughes has done OK this season, despite the defence.

The real problem that Sparky has had concerns his defence: he bought Lescott and Toure (from Arsenal), but they just cannot play together. At the weekend against Sunderland, we won, but conceded 3 goals that would shame a Sunday League team. Our defence was non existant, same against Bolton ( another 3 conceded) and Hull .... we sold Richard Dunne too soon - Dunne was player of the year at City for the last three years, and was the player who TALKED and ORGANISED the defence. Robinho only 'plays' when he wants to (he was bought by the owners, not by Hughes)....

Good Luck Sparky wherever you may end up

Sparky was always going to be replaced as soon as the money became available, sad as though it is, it isn't the games he has lost, but the ones he hasn't won and should have done.

I for one am pleased that Fabio is in charge of my national team, he's turned them into also rans into potential winners. His vision, his ways and his discipline have worked.

Italians in English football? It horses for courses...just like my main love in sport, Rugby Union. We have a plethora of Aussie and Kiwi coaches and the simple reason is because they are the best at it.
