I just read in our Sunday papers ... that CT(Computer Topography) scans lead to 20,000 cancer deaths (in USA where this survey was carried out by the Cancer Research.......

Like Mammograms .. where cancer is suspected ... If your lump is benign the scan can cause it to become malignant!

Would you take the "chance" of getting cancer .....?..and going for a "routine" check up by Scan?

I have never had a mammogram and have no intention of having one.

I can't see how slamming breasts between plates can be good for them. I will take my chances.

Not heard about scan causing benign lumps to turn malignant but I would not be surprised if that was the case.

Exactly my sentiment. I fancy a fatalistic attitude towards the subject – my mother died of breast cancer, it took 8 weeks between the diagnosis and the death, and I’ve heard that the decease has some genetic angle and hereditary increase the risk factor.

I prefer though not to discuss the subject... yes, I know it’s an ostrich’s policy, but it feels better that way.

Well for starters they shoot you up with a mixture of iodine and plutonium, so that it irradiates the area, so they can see in on the scan. Add radiation to any kind of cancer cells and it will multiply the cells randomly causing it to spread. Common sense really.

I had a ct scan on my brain some years back..........it wasn't for suspected cancer though luckily.wine

Just had a Computer-Tomography New Year's Eve.
Setting up took longer than the Scan, which was over in about the same tome like a normal X-Ray.
Too many selfstyled Healthgurus on the Web these days, without the slightest qualifications, except reading the wrong Conclusions into other People's Research.
That Scan saved my Life,by telling the Surgeon where to cut, instead having to go in blind.dunno conversing

I'm not saying there is no place in the health service for a scan. They can be a of great value and no doubt have saves many lives. What I object to is routinely scanning of womens breasts. Here they do it every two years. And I have been told it hurts so that to me indicates they are doing something to damage the breast.

Well, I`m a Self-Styled Health Guru .... but this piece of news was gleaned from a publication in the newspaper which was quoting facts from the CANCER ASSOCIATION.

From a continuation ofyour same sources in Wiki........

In 2009 a number of studies appeared that further defined the risk of cancer that may be caused by CT scans. One study indicated that radiation by CT scans is often higher and more variable than cited and each of the of the 19,500 CT scans that are daily performed in the US is equivalent to 30 to 442 chest x-rays in radiation. It has been estimated that CT radiation exposure will result in 29,000 new cancer cases just from the CT scans performed in 2007. The most common cancers caused by CT are thought to be lung cancer, colon cancer and leukemia with younger people and women more at risk. These conclusions, however, are criticized by the American College of Radiology (ACR) that maintains that the life expectancy of CT scanned patients is not that of the general population and that the model of calculating cancer is based on total body radiation exposure and thus faulty.

CT scans can be performed with different settings for lower exposure in children, although these techniques are often not employed. Surveys have suggested that currently, many CT scans are performed unnecessarily

we all know the yanks like things big. 20.000 deaths by caused by CT ? 25.5 million carried out per year. I would rather risk death by CT than walk around luminescant for the rest of my life (glow in the dark) cos some half baked turd in the radiolog<y dept got the dosage wrong on the Xray.

I have worked in the medical industry for the last 15 years and i have never heard of one single death diretly caused by CT

Ja ... people get scanned every day, hundred of people ........Oh thank God for modern medicine! BUT ..... my one step-daughter had numerous scans (every few weeks there were more delightful photographs of his growth) when she was pregnant ... and the baby when he was born ... well .... there was no fluid in the womb and his lungs had shrivelled and he died 6 hours after birth ..... Scans heat fluid ... use your head about that one.

Me personally ... I had a lump in one breast, very painful, doctor booked me for a Mammogram. On way to appointment I changed my mind, cancelled it ..... and for 2 years took my chances .... very painful, even my one arm on that side was painful ...the lump eventually disappeared...... that was over 20 years ago. I still not, as far as I know, got any cancer. I believe my body shed whatever it was ... but with that Mammogram thing I would probably have ended up lop-sided?

Hi,
I had cancer..in1993..malignent mellenoma and it was a very colse call..I had 2 scans..one full body one..and then..months after the surgery because of something else another one of the head and neck..well needless to say I am healthy and still kickin'..and yes I would do one again anytime..because they are good..now they have MRI which would do just as well..they have and are doing studies on all sorts of things..they have even proved that you can get cancer from eating white bread..among other things..and if you think about it..what is not risky today..flu shots, anastesia, most medication have a health risk.I would not pay to much attention to such statistics..because they do include cases that really would have no bearing to it..

Yesterday my baby-girl phoned, very sad, and told me that my ex phoned her and told that that morning he had to take his cat to a veterinary in order to finish her off… Of course, I phoned him at once. He was crying.

According to what he told me between sobs, the veterinary diagnosed breast cancer and… and there was nothing else to do, but to kill her as quick and painless as possible. Her death wasn’t completely unexpected, she was 17 years old after all, but… but I cried too. I tried to comfort him, employed all the platitudes there are to be employed – that cats don’t live as long as people, which you don’t think about when you get a kitten, but you should… and that she was old and he’d’ve been prepared… and that she lived a good life… and that one beautiful day we all are going to die … and… (Oh, I’m not to be outdone in using clichés given the opportunity. )

He said that he’s planning to get a black female kitten with an attitude (gods know, the diseased had a hell of an attitude… but on the other side all female cats have an attitude…) I guess it’s emptiness that pets leave after them; the absolute loyalty they grant us without any other reason but the generosity of their souls… In short, I couldn’t work, and now I have to go to work tomorrow as there is some gold to be mined and some lumber to be jacked, and a dead-line to be respected.

Didn’t know though that cats could get breast cancer.
