Is it just me? When I read a thread posted by someone who purports to be in a city or town in the U.S. and that person cannot string 5 words together without a number of grammatical and spelling errors, does this not seem strange to you? I have been out of school and out of the U.S. for a number of years, but has our educational system fallen so low that our youth can't even communicate in English any longer? Are such posts the work of scammers...or are they the result of a lack of education and a lack of caring? I am a lover of carefully chosen words and of heartfelt expression and I am saddened to witness the decline of language. Sigh.

I completely agree with you. Words are not only for basic communication, they also express subtlety, nuance and feeling. One of the reasons that the English language has become a world language is its power to express shades of meaning. No two words express exactly the same idea. Many messages on here are inarticulate to put it politely - although to be honest there are some sites where it is even worse.
I think that the kindest response to the question you asked is that most errors are lack of care.

I has long rezilized thats my 6 years of college and publishing two books is just not fine enough for some borish snobs who thinks theys betta thans us poor common folk just cause they can spell a word. soes if youall dont mind Ill deal with my ignorance in my own time and fer now Im just gona have fun chatten with my friends. ok
I usually try my best concerning this topic. I think my worst flaw is run-on sentences. I've always had problems with that part. But I LOVE spelling. Sometimes I get carried away talking like a southern hick, but it's mostly in fun and not from laziness.
Englishman55: Nope.... "spelt"...... but good effort A+
Top of the class !!
"Spelled" is correct (as is "spelt," but the former is more often used in the U.S.). I didn't see any misspellings, but I did see loads of punctuation errors!

Sorry... I was coming from the viewpoint of the correct English, not American English, but the differences have been discussed numerous times before in other threads.
I think it right to distinguish between American English and English, but as long as the message is getting across, I for one am not too bothered.

I agree totally, I love the English language, it can be so expressive and colourful when used correctly. I read the posts here and wince when I see errors made that are so basic and child like,I just make the assumption that English is not their first language. I do not think poor grammar/spelling is a reflection on intelligence, but is a reflection on the writers character, a well phrased and coherent post shows someone gave thought and imagination, whereas poor grammar and spelling shows they could well be lazy and uncaring. We all make mistakes, but when a person continuously posts with little regard to their spelling etc. It shows a greater picture of that persons personality. IMO

Not really....I think in THE INTERNATIONAL forums not everybody their forst language is English.
I think it's mind over matter....and if you don't mind...then it doesn't matter.
