When the Lord was creating Truck Drivers he was into his 6th day of overtime. An angel appeared and said,"You're doing a lot of fiddling around on this one."
And the Lord said,"Have you read the specs on this order?"

A truck driver has to be able to drive 10-12 hours per day, through any type of weather, on any type of road, know the hiway traffic laws of 48 states and 10 provinces. He has to be ready ans able to unload 40,000 lbs. of cargo after driving thru the night, sleeping in areas of cities and towns that the police refuse to patrol,
He has to be able to live in his truck 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, for weeks on end. Has to offer first aid and motor assistance to his fellow travelers. Meet just in time schedules and still maintain an even and controlled composure when all around him appear to have gone mad.
He has to be in top physical condition at all times, running on strong black coffee and half eaten meals, he has to have 6 pairs of hands.
The angel shook her head slowly and said,"Six pairs of hands...NO WAY."
It's not the hands that are causing me problems said the Lord. It's the 3 pairs of eyes a driver has to have.
That's on the standard model? the angel asked.
The Lord nodded. One pair that sees the herd of deer in the thickets 3 miles away. Another pair in the side of his head for the blind spots that motorists love to hide in. Another pair for in the front that can look reassuringly at the bleeding victim of a drunk driver that crashed into his ICC bumper at 70 MPH and say,"You'll be all right ma'am, when he knows it isn;t so.

Lord, said the angel, touching his sleeve, rest and work on this tomorrow.
I can't said the Lord. I already have a model that can drive 650 miles a day, without incident and can raise a family of 5 without ever seeing them on 30 cents a mile.
The angel circled the model of the truck driver very slowly. Can it think she asked.
You bet said the Lord. It can tell you the element of every HAZMAT load invented, recite Federal Motor Carrier Regulations rules and regs. in it's sleep. It can deliver, picup, be a husband, father, offer timely advice to strangers, search for missing children, defend womens or chidrens rights, get 8 hours of good rest on the street and raise a family of law respecting citizens...without ever going home and still keep its sense of humor.
This driver also has phenomenal personal control. He can deal with delivery and picup areas created from scenes painted in hell, coax a lumper to actually work for his money, comfort the family of an accident victim. Then read in the daily newspaper how truck drivers are nothing more than killers on wheels who have no respect for the rights of others while using the nations hiways.
Finally the angel bent over and ran her fingers across the cheek of the driver. There's a leak she said. I told you that you were trying to put too much into this model.
That's not a leak said the Lord, it's a tear. What;s the tear for?asked the angel. It's for the bottled up emotions, for fallen comrads, for commitment to that piece of cloth called the flag, for justice for the family without its husband or father.
You are genius said the angel. The Lord looked somber. I didn't put the tear there. (AMEN!)

TRAVELLER'S PRAYER
(Based upon a traditional Irish blessing)

Slim Dusty

May the road rise up to meet you
May the wind be always at your back
May the sun shine warm upon your face
And the rains fall soft upon your tracks
And until, until we meet again
May God hold you safely in the palm of His hand

May the hills come down to greet you
May the rocks give shelter in the storm
May the dust be soft beneath your feet
And the dark give rest before the dawn
And until, until we meet again
May God hold you safely in the palm of His

In the palm of His hand
In the palm of his hand
in the palm of his hand
Safely in the palm of his hand

May your life have many memories
May your death be sweet and full of peace
May your hope last an eternity
And may your joy carry on and never cease
And until, until we meet again
May God hold you safely in the palm of His

And until, until we meet again
May God hold you safely in the palm of His
In the palm of His hand
In the palm of his hand
in the palm of his hand
Safely in the palm of his hand
In the palm of His hand
In the palm of his hand
in the palm of his hand
Safely in the palm of his hand

I have alot of respect for truckers and know if it weren't for them I wouldn't be able to purchase the things I do.

One time when I was traveling out of state and I needed directions on how to get somewhere a truck driver gave me those directions.I figured what better person then to ask but a truck driver since they travel many highways each and everyday.

So to all the truck drivers I say a huge Thank you for all you do and how hard you ALL work.teddybear

Just doing my job but it's nice to be appreciated now and then.hug

Oh BTW you might mention how helpful the DOT cops are by making us pay a dollar a pound for being overweight when the shipper lies to us about what a load weighs. Or how they can just decide on a whim to do a 2 hour safety inspection on our truck and cause us to miss a delivery deadline. Or how on the Cross Westchester Expressway in NY only the trucks have to go through a toll booth but not cars. Or how it costs about $85.00 just to go from New Jersey to Queens New York & back a distance of less than 20 miles.
Municipalities see big rigs as an ATM machine on wheels. Slim will know exactly what I'm talking about.
Thanks again hon.

My dad drove truck for about 50 years. I was married to a trucker for 23 years. I spent many long hours on the highways in a truck myself and even learned to drive one. I have a great deal of respect for most truckers. I've known my share of truckers who were idiots, a**hole, and dangerous jerks, but for the most part truckers are a great bunch. They work long hours under a lot of pressure and still manage to laugh off the nasty way a lot of people think of them. In most cases truckers are notoriously underpaid and totally unappreciated.

thank you to sassy and all that have replied. yes I am one of those dreaded truck drivers. as I read this i am getting loaded in chicago for an overnight to new york, thats after a weekend load from miami fl. then I have to do a day trip from ny to va.... yall get the idea. this is all done wihin the rules and safe. but as your post says there are drawbacks. I have to give my wife a LOT of credit, while we talk most days, some it may only be for me to let her know that I am safe, parked, and going to bed. as my shift changes from day to day. but in the end I LOVE my job and what I do. its the days your rolling down the hi-way watching the sun come up or go down and thinking im free.

to all the other Drivers out there, keep it between the ditches, have a safe ride, and a good weekend when you get to it. wave

to all the non-drivers, thank you for apreceating what we dowine

Years ago I was in industrial sales and spent many, many hours on the hiways. Truckers were my friends and kept me awake and alive by being there when I was tired. That is where I got my CB handle of "oldfox". They are a great bunch, generally speaking. I remember a young boy in western Va. who was confined to his bed from illness. Truckers made a point to talk to him on the CB radio as they went by. Yep, good guys !peace
