Your choice of quality of jewelry was influenced by the fact that you weren't getting along. Are you rewarding her "cooperation" with more or less expensive gifts depending on how cooperative she is, OR do you love..................the answer can't be both.
It's fine to buy costume jewelry - but not as a pseudo-punishment

And I agree about your post on the people who worked hard to get diamonds and get paid next to nothing for their efforts. And I disagree also. If they didn't have that job..then they would have nothing. Evil situation.
But if she is or was the girl of your dreams and she was hoping for an engagement ring...and received a cheap butterfly ring instead. (I would have wrung your neck). Best to go together to pick out an engagement ring. Even if it costs more than what is in your bank account. Borrow. It is an investment (and I am not talking about money) in the future. This ring is the ring that will be passed on to your future daughter and hopefully your grand daughter etc.. I made the mistake of saying..well we can't afford an engagement ring..now I have nothing to give my daughter(s)to pass on and on. Buy the best you can afford. You borrow for a car (which you know is not going to be around forever)so why not borrow for a ring that symbolizes love and the love that is passed with it.
