I would say: communication is the base. If you can talk to each other, to discuss things and situations, even less pleasant ones, then the rest often is manageable.

besides talking ..you have to be willing to listen too and respect each others differences..learn to except the faults each one has
and not trying to change the other person..give each other some space to grow
