A Cypriot colleague of mine at work and his wife recently had a baby girl. I know they are waiting 40 days before allowing visitors (please no comments on this- its a cultural thing). Does anyone have any advice on things I can say when allowed to visit the little one and welcome her to the world? I have a present already picked out and bagged ready for her.

Like, I know you say 'Chronia Polla' for a birthday or names day- and I am practising my 'Christos Anesti' and 'Alithos Anesti' ready for Easter- but is there something similar to say to the parents or the little one?

Baby is 3 weeks old this weekend just gone- so I have a while to wait yet- gives me time to practise!

teddybear big hugs!

Are there any traditional gifts or anything? Do I need to take something for parents or is a gift for just baby fine?

I've never been to a wedding or anything over here so I'm looking forwards to this!

I don't know anything about Cypriot traditions, but when you have a baby everyone goes potty admiring it and cooing at it and giving it presents - and as the new mum you're pathetically grateful for anyone who notices YOU!

So I would say things to the new mum like "motherhood obviously suits you!" and "You look amazing!"

And if you want to compliment the baby, say "Beautiful, nearly as beautiful as your mum!" "You've obviously inherited your good looks from your mum!" etc... such remarks can't fail to please!!!!
