I've had several accusations lately that I seem to think I'm "better then everyone else"... Nothing could be further from the truth. Yes I think I have value, but no more than anyone else and have the same self esteem issues that so many have.

I am opinionated...but when did having an opinion infer that you are better then others? I don't believe it does.

So it comes down to the words. We all have skills and abilities...one of mine happens to be the ability to write supported by a background in speech and debate. The fact that I'm able to write in a proffesional manner, as do many on here, doesn't make my opinion any more valid then anyone elses, nor does it give me any feeling of superiority.

If you're ability is art...does that make you feel superior, to those like myself, that have difficulty drawing a straight line?

I'm not trying to play the victim here just making an observation...

On more then one occasion I have posted opinions arguing the content of a thread and others have posted thoughts or comments along the same lines...yet mine are the ones that ellicit a negative response. I have no problem with this and am happy to debate the topic...but I do have a problem when the debate turns into a personal attack and accusations that I think I'm better then anyone.

In these cases the person responding is the one who has placed more value on my opinion...not me.

I've found that when people attack, it's because they feel threatened... Why does my opinion threaten you? It is only my opinion and has no more power or value then anyone elses.

So please...argue my words, my opinions all you want...but leave the personal attacks out... personal attacks threaten me and I'm human like everyone else and will often respond in kind although I'm not proud of that.

Some people's style is to attack the people and not the subject. We see it in everyday life also. In politics it is the official position to discredit the person rather than the subject matter.

Often people take positions that can not be defended, so personal attacks is all they have left. It is sad!

I continue to state my opinion and one-liners and leave the attacks to others. Most notice I don't enter into Threads once a 'war' starts.

The thing is...I really enjoy a good debate...all my friends think like I do so in our conversations we all just sit around agreeing with each other...laugh

Cs gives me the opportunity to debate different points of view and to learn more about the opposing argument...I love this...and to my shame I have a hard time walking away from a personal attack...something I should probably work on. laugh

To Pixels...thanks for the flowers, but I'm really not looking for sympathy here...just getting something off my chest. bouquet

"Be, live and leave the bickering to those who feel compelled to control others because they can't control their lives"
That's my motto ( I know, a long one,lol ) and I live by it every moment of the day.

Literally or figuratively? We all have different ways of communicating with each other.
Like you, I will not back down when it's a personal attack.

In many wars the smartest general has gone around the army in front of them rather than a frontal attack. Hand-to-hand combat is okay once in a while, but both usually gets bloody. Have you ever seen the face of a boxer who had been doing it for many years. The personal attacks and counter attacks changes both parties in the long run. Several times I remove myself from the Forums Threads because I find it is changing me into somebody I don't like.

I applaude you on that motto, It is possible though to enjoy s good debate without feeling the need to "convert" everyone to your way of thinking don't you think?

Sometimes there are two correct answers or ways of doing things and both are good.

Well, as one who takes the huff only too easily, I've never had a problem with your posts but I can understand why some folks would feel threatened by your assertiveness and communication skills. People sometimes assosciate their self worth with whatever stand they happen to be taking at the time which is one hell of a high pedestal to put yourself upon. Apart from making life very hard work, personally, I found this a very lonely and defensive/aggressive way to be.

Fortunately I've mellowed with age and can allow myself and others, the right to be right and the right to be wrong.

But one or two still get under my skin though!mumbling

Too many years on the speech and debate team... and old habits die hard.

That's an interesting obsevation regarding self worth and ones stand... must make for an awful lot of pedestal hopping...laugh

I base my self worth on what I do, not what I say... I never thought of the other prespective...but I can see how people who do would take the debate of a topic much more personaly.

Very well put, jb. I've had it happen to me, as well. You've made some EXTREMELY VALID points here. I've always enjoyed reading what you have to say, & will continue to, I'm sure. wine thumbs up hug

Thanks and the feeling is mutual. Godsgift really gave me something to think about though...that some people associate their self worth with their opinion...which would then make any argument or disagreement feel personal... I honestly never considered that but it may be why some feel justified in attacking on a personal level???
