When we are in private communication with people here they usually sign of their messages with their real name.

I sometimes wonder whether people mind when their names are then used in the forums. I rarely do so myself, just in case it would be a problem, but I have on occasion.

It´s not a problem for me personally, my profile name being my real name.

Any comments?

Hi Jan.

Not a problem for me either, but I generally tend to be careful when posting with someone, to try to respect them until I see whatever the norm is with that person.
Also I have been asked by people not to call them by their name in the forums as well.

Hi Vinny.

Thanks, you´ve confirmed my suspicion that some people prefer not to have their real names used in the forums.

I´ve never been asked not to use someone´s name as you have, but I am reluctant to use them most of the time.

I suppose it´s down to the individual to make it clear whether they prefer their name to be used or not.

If I wanted to use my real name here, I would have. Why on earth use someone's real name if they have pseudonym here?

I have no problem with others using my name here in the forums as I put my real name at the end of all my posts.

In a way, my entire full name is on display if someone can figure it out.grin

Yes I understand that. My point was that we do discover people´s real names in private messages as they are often readily given, so does that give one carte blanche to use it in the forums?

It only happened twice, as most people dont seem to mind. Im still careful though.

Also I think people join the site, for whatever reason, and decide on some anonymitiy and create a 'handle', yet they make friends and their name is then used openly.

uh oh I really feel like I am on the wall on this one. I feel it personalizes it when they use my name. And sometimes I would rather just keep to myself who I know here and who I am in communication with. But out of respect for others I do not use their names.dunno

Here's my personal opinion. I think it is inappropriate to use someone's real name here, unless they have used it publically themselves. My impression of people going out of their way to use real names here, is a bit like "Oh, I'm on the inside track with this person, we're on personal terms etc"...It smacks a bit of "cliqueiness".

Yes, that´s a good point about the fact that it also tells everybody who you are or have been in communication with.

I also agree...Newbies come into the forums and see people personally chatting back and forth for pages at a time and they feel like an outsider. Probably will not bother posting on the thread subject because of that, even though they wanted to.

My thought on the personal chit chat is send an email if you want to know "what's up" with someone, very cliquee.....drinking

It dosen't bother me one way or another. Thumper has been my nickname for close to 30 years, so it almost is my real name. Stan has been around a bit longer though. As far as other people, If they use their real name now and then, then I'll use it. If not, I wont.dunno

I don't have a problem with my real first name being used if its by someone I know fairly well, and like (otherwise "Rose" will do). I am aware and conscious of those who I know (tacitly) or have expressed a desire to be just referred to by their profile name on the Forums and I respect and appreciate that. Its not my entitlement to decide otherwise. I am aware of those who don't mind but sometimes I'll just use an initial.

Good thread, Jan!! bouquet

Yes, I occasionally use an initial, it doesn´t seem so presumptious does it. wave

Personally I prefer not use my name in the forums for general privacy. But that's just my view. I have found myself having to double check that I am not using anyone's name though on a couple of occasions.
