Helping the needy and giving away to the poor, some believe, makes us happier. Do you take it as true?

If you think it is true then, how do you think, the act of giving away and helping the needy affects the state of our mind?

Hi Phoenix,

Welcome. You always come up with nice arguments.

Well, to me, indeed it feels good. And, there are lots of others who feel in the same way. But, I am trying to find out the link between helping some one and feeling happier. If happiness is a state of mind then how ease of some one ( whom I have helped out ) affects my state of mind? I hope I made myself clear!

Well, I heard some ancient wisdom stuff about this ..... goes something like this ...... "You only as rich as what you give" ..... Well, obviously, if you got something and can share it .... then you have enough.

HOw much is enough? If someone is cold, and you got two coats then you give them one. If you got food and someone has no food, you share with them.

How does it affect our minds? Well, part of this wisdom says "You gotta give without thought" .... So, you give, with no thought, just because you can. Well, that`s my deduction of this.

The poor have always been part of us. We just been fortunate to have more, and we can also lose what we got ......... so ...... Treat others as you would like to be treated ... huh?

Ultimately we are self serving, so everything we do must please us on some level.

To be seen as a good person makes us happy because the morals and ethics we are taught, make us like to be seen as good, and when we do something good we are being part of something bigger. We are told that we are good if we do charitable work.

To do the "right" thing makes us happy by helping us fit in with the practices of others too. We get rewarded with praise for doing the right thing, and castigated for being "bad".

Religions tell us to give, that sharing is "good", so we feel like we reach higher dimentions than our animal state, which makes us happy too.

Scientifically we release more endorphins and seratonin by being more relaxed and having more energy. We feel more relaxed if we don't feel guilty, or are not seen by society as outcasts (misers), so guilt-free we function better, and giving, to fit in, (or for whatever reason), helps us be like that.

We often get rewarded by seeing the faces of those we give things too as well, or hearing their thanks, or hearing stories of the changes our gift made to others. We smile and feel self satisfied.

Society, and the powers that be, whether religious or governmental, ensure that we save them the responsibiility of looking after our poor and disadvantaged, by making us feel guilty enough to share, and reward us with approval, and inclusion, which we seem to crave.

There are probably many other angles to this too, but they would only all boil down to self satisfaction anyway, in my experience.

This is reminding me of all the "charity" work done FOR Cancer .......... ? Anyone here know just how much Chemo treatments cost....? And if you got no money you get no treatment!

Only those who can afford to pay can live a little longer .......drinking

... Yet ...... we know all about life on Mars, the Moon, Saturn, and everyones telephone conversations .......confused

Once I have given money, not much, for homeless animals. No, it didn’t feel good. It felt sad. It’s not right that there are homeless cats and dogs, and my little contribution wouldn’t change anything. An additional portion of porridge, an additional day to live… perhaps a tiny chance that someone would take it home. No, didn’t feel good then, doesn’t feel good now.

Once I have taken home a homeless kitten. Han stayed with us for 7 years. It felt good. I loved him then, and I still love him. Perhaps, he is the reason I haven’t got another cat.
