I am desperately trying to lose a few pounds and a friend of mine suggested going on a 1200 calorie diet. Has anyone tried it and how successful is it. Opinions please.

So eating less carbs and not calories works? Have you tried that yourself?

I am exercising 5 to 6 days a week so thought maybe cutting calories may speed up the weight loss.

one theory is eat every 3 hours

acquaint it to having a fire and keeping it stoked

change your workout? when the body is adapted to a certain exercise routine you will plateau

mix it up!

dont eat after dark

cut coffee and sugar for 2 weeks

then your insulin levels regulate and you arent activating the release of cortisol which is a hormone that really affects middle aged women

oh yeah

if you exercise that much you may have good endurance?
do you enjoy exercising?

there is a plan my son and his g/f have used
i believe its a 45 day thing- maybe 60?

its called insanity
he lost 25 pound and has nice tone and is quite happy never hungry

not for wimps
its for someone willing to be challenged, disciplined and work up to the best they can do with it

its doable im sure because he is not mr motivated-but i have seen it and its a ball busting 45 minutes

Yeah, I just changed my exercise routine. I don't take any sugar other than natural. Never thought of cutting coffee out; that just may kill me but will give it a try. Thanks for the advice.handshake

im starting over and im off coffee

i only drink a bit in the morning but like it very strong

sugar is tougher and see white carbs turn to sugar alcohol in the blood...

i really like brown rice and tuna mixed together no mayo
i just season the rice as i like

i feel so satisfied when i eat that

i also like a small round sirloin they are 220 calories and clean protein sliced thin over a pile of spinach and lemon juice w/ a tomato...

simple and just 2 main courses

it always works for me and i feel excellent and have no cravings

after the first 2 weeks that is-

doh

i will have a cup of tea around 3 in the afternoon now and again
or if i have a lack of caffeine headache but an aspiring and tons of water all day will stave of the headaches and they do pass after a few days of no coffeehandshake

Don't go much below ~1,600 calories. Less than that starts putting a lot of stress on the body.

Don't cut down calories suddenly. This will trigger a stress response where the body will go into starvation mode and start saving as much as possible. Go down gradually.

Don't diet for long. Cycle with going back to maintenance levels (and even above, if you're exercising) for a while, then slowly cut down again. As said before, avoid the sudden stressful changes. Don't be afraid of having one cheat meal a week so that your body remembers what it's like to have good supply of calories - avoid the stress response of starvation!

Do high intensity interval training, not long steady slow cardio. Long steady cardio will eat up at your muscle when glycogen stores run out (this is not something up for discussion, Pyruvate decarboxylation is an irreversible step in our metabolism, so if you burn all your sugar you WILL go into gluconeogenesis and start breaking down protein - muscle; that's bad). Long cardio has also the downside of slowing down your metabolism as the body becomes more efficient at doing it, so as it's been kindly pointed out, vary it a bit. Sprints, elliptic, rowing, cross-training, there are a million easy ways to do interval. Best way, you'll reap the benefit with as little as 20-30 minutes.

Don't be afraid of doing weight lifting exercises - real free weights, not machines. As a woman, you simply don't have the testosterone levels to get ripped or muscular without juicing, so don't worry about it. A firmer base of muscles will have the following benefits: Higher breasts (due to better support), perkier butt, and a higher base metabolism. Long term benefits include preventing osteoporosis, a good thing too.

Avoid processed carbs like the plague - go wholemeal. Distribute your carb intake along the day, so that you keep glycogen stores topped up and you don't burn the precious, high-metabolism muscle.

Most importantly, remember this is a permanent lifestyle change. One of the key reasons why all diets fail is the "I've lost the weight, I can go back to eating normal again" mentality. The previous normal is what got you there, so nip it at the bud. Good change on the diet and habits > quick fix of self-starvation to lose pounds faster. Take the weight off and KEEP IT OFF.

Good luck :)

Thanks for the advice. I do weight training 4 days a week and with free weights. What do you mean by juicing? I do have some muscles but not much and would like to be more ripped. I actually do eat quite healthy; lots of fruit and veggies. Rarely touch things like rice or pasta and eat very little meat. I also cook healthier; don't fry, eat anything breaded; or any fast foods.

I found a diet that I use occasionally, 1300 cal a day.
300 breakfast, 350 lunch and 450 dinner plus 2 snacks (100 cal per snack)It's the "Quick-Start Guide" Found it at Reader's Digest online.

I also have used "The Complete & Up to Date Fat Book" by Karen J Bellerson. You can order it from your local bookstore if they don't have it in stock. It has calorie and fat content and lots of good info.

I normally don't have a problem with weight usually, but occasionally I just "Feel" like I need to lose 5 lbs and this really works. You'd be surprised how much you can munch if you eat low calorie stuff and get creative with food.

I hope that I don't get into trouble mentioning sources.
