Since lead was used extensively in plumbing until the 80's, many homes and buildings have pipes and plumbing fixtures that contain lead. Lead can leach from pipes into household water, making this plumbing a major source of toxic lead poisoning. Lead poisoning is so toxic that even very low levels can be dangerous. Lead consumption and poisoning has been linked to learning disabilities, muscle and bone disorders and kidney damage. Lead levels should be tested at each faucet in the home, especially if plumbing fixtures could date from the 80's or before.
Do test my water now and again but not for lead. Have copper and plastic piping in my place. Testing for impurities in the water from organisms, methane levels etc.
The universities will usually test for you as will most well drilling places for water quality. Best to call a plumber in to just give a quick check on what kind of piping you're running in your house if you are worried about that though.

In Ontario, we can take water samples into the health department for testing.
In Ontario, there are drinking water regulations as pertain to large and small waterworks. They do not pertain to the individual home owner that is on a well. City water is tested constantly. If you are worried about lead, yes have your water tested at an accredited Lab. Contact your local Health Unit. The pipe leading from your house to the street is your responsibility to replace, anything beyond that is the cities responsibility. In my city they are winding down the lead testing because most of the pipes have now been replaced. For info look pn the Ontario government website: Clean Water Act.
