A good question is when does a comment become a blog ...

and most of the so called blogs on CS are mere comments .. I wish they'd be posted to the forums instead to give the forums more traffik dunno

smoky: Hoi Tomboygirl.....

Ja, it was all news to me too.

I been "writing" for years and years .... and I have all these old dusty manuscripts stuffed in drawers ....and never knew what to do with them.....

And then my one son, unfortunately, inherited the writing bug from me .... and he has written a book.

And then he investigated the possibilites of getting it published ... But it seems that authors, these days, have to "sell themselves" ..... be able to prove to publishers that they have a reading audience........

And, at one of our kitchen conferences, he enlightened me about Blog writing. He has a blog site, and he writes regularly, and is developing an audience ....... and one day he will approach a publisher with proof of his reading audience. .......... while inbetween he writes his second book ... and one day he will be published ... Meanwhile he writes about his experiences living here in Switzerland. (I will divulge his Blog site later, you may enjoy his style of writing?).....

So, now, I am trying to build up my own courage to "go public" .... and dipping my toes into this world of Blogs.

I really would like to retire from doing the laundry for Credit Suisse!

(Funny thing .... he, my son, refers to "my forum" CS as Credit Suisse ...hahhaaaaaa ... CS!?

I practice on the blog site here ..... and edit it for the Google Site ... sorry to make it boring for you.

Sounds interesting, might be an idea at some point,my son's only 12 but wants to be an author too,he won 2nd prize in a Cyprus comp at 7 years old, with a story about his life,in which 1st prize had the book published. He's in an English programme for gifted kids this year which promises more comps, amongst other things..would love to find a way for him to publish something!

keep posting links smoky, you have such wit in your writing.

I would say, get him doing his own blog? It would be interesting for him, give him experience, and it`s SO nice to see how many people have read what you`ve written ... and you can also see where they come from, what sites, what countries ...... Real good encouragement.

Tis VERY difficult for a new author to just get a book published.
So that would be a route for him to follow.

venere08: Hi smoky,

I just had a quick look at your blog via the link you provided. Thanks. keep it up.

I did start a cuple of blogs, but they fell by the wayside. I was thinking earlier this evening of maybe starting a travelling blog, triggered by the last couple of weeks of being in Italy. Just so maybe I could help someone avoid some of the frustrations I've experienced, such as use of internet and mobile phones, more specifically, coverage. The upside being how helpful people can be to total strangers, engendering a sense of real kinship of sorts.

I must tell you... I saw a message on yahoo from a very dear online friend of mine I haven't spoken with in months. She used to be on CS. The link led me to her blog and I always love reading her entries. this time was extra special as she had got married so I was able to share in her world with all its recent joy and frustrations.

So, here's a salut to blogging

Hoi Venere.

Hey, that would be MOST interesting! DO IT!
You can create a Google account in about 2 minutes, and its free.

Thanks Conrad.grin Ja, he sees things most people take for granted ...... Like somewhere on one of his blogs he talks about the roadsign indicating Frogs crossing the road!...... Something I was most amused, and bewildered by, when I saw it!.........rolling on the floor laughing

Ha ..... the blind leading the blind ........ I`m also pretty ignorant with computers!

Just type in Google Blogs ....... and then "create an account" comes up ....... there is stacks of info in their "help" section ... and you go with that.

If he makes a mistake .....he can easily rectify it.... thru their help.

When it comes to his Blog Name ...... tell him to try and keep it as simple as possible. Sometimes the name is "unavailable" cause someone else has it ... then he can add things, till it becomes "available" ... and then it is his!

You can private mail me if you come to the end of your tether ......grin ... maybe I can help.

I sat for hours making simple stupid mistakes one after another ... and then I got it right! But I`m inclined to think in a complicated fashion ... when it is just plain simple!

Smoky, I have blogged on and off (mostly off) for the past 4 years. It was a great way to meet people who understood what I was going through. I was making the move from the USA to Italy at the time and I met so many other expats that had done the same thing. It was a great help to feel connected to others. Over the years and have written more or less about the experiences I have had while being here in Italy.

And the link works fine. Good luck!
