kidatheart: What does being a Canadian mean to you?

How do you identify yourself and relate in the mix of cultures we have living together in Canada?

Do we actually have a national identity?

Canada is a great country. I am proud to be Canadian.

eyesthatknowwhy: ... for sure!!! The list goes on and on, it is never ending! Was reading the "rant" again and have to say...I know alot of people who do own dogsleds...and I do know A few that do/have eaten MUKTUK (blubber) and they still get it shipped down for their dog teams! And, we do have more nice days than not and more sunshine than not...and we are friendly, but not so friendly that we won't stand up for ourselves or others who are in need of protection!!! I am proud to be Canadian!!
I have friends and family who are or have been or will be in Afganastan. A good friend lost her son over there. So if you don't want to stand behind our troops (who will prevail), THEN PLEASE STAND IN FRONT OF THEM AND WALK A MILE IN THIER BOOTS

kidatheart: Of course it does! What are your experiences so far? How do you see Canada and Canadians as someone from another country?

Have you had any Screech and kissed a cod yet? Hiya N

Hi! What a fab thread! :) What is Screech please?

I emigrated here from the UK 2 years ago. I have a website - which is actually currently under construction but its kinda huge
and basically all about how wonderful I find Canada to be!

I came over when I was 12 initially, and visited many times between then and finally living the dream, and becoming a PR of this awesome country.

For me - Canada is just the most awesome country. I'd never want to live anywhere else and I've travelled extensively.

The people: You are so friendly, and patriotic! I love that! Your children are polite and well mannered AND family values are a joy to behold! Everything is child friendly over here! People take their children to restaurants in the evening! Now you might think that's par for the course, but believe me not in the UK! Whole families go and have big picnics and BBQ's and visit amussement parks. Its awesome. You guys work to live over here instead of living to work. That's the way it should be!

The Climate: Snow AND hot summers oh and beautiful falls. Perfect!

The truly GREAT Outdoors: OMG camping over here is so much fun! I LOVE how everyone (well a majority of people it seems) love to be outdoors all the time. Even just being able to do outdoor skating and swimming is divine to someone brought up in the rainy climes of the UK! We have probably spent more time outdoors in the past 2 years than the previous 10 in the UK put together. Maybe even more!!

Natural Beauty: Enough said! Supreme! Haven't explored anywhere other than Ontario yet but I hear its gorgeous everywhere you go and I can't wait to see it all for myself!

I feel supremely honoured to be a resident of Canada and I can't wait to take my citizenship next year which will just be the icing on the cake.Your country simply rocks!

PS. My blog is still up and running so you can go check it out if you are so inclined!
The rest of the site should be about soon! But of course its summer and I'm not indoors much now! LOL! ;)

I am a proud Canadian "newfie" lol.

Canada's national identity is based as much on being one of the greatest countries to live in as much as anything else. That is what makes Canada unique.

Thought this was good enough to share

The Haircut

One day a florist went to a barber for a haircut.

After the cut, he asked about his bill, and the barber replied, 'I cannot accept money from you , I'm doing community service this week.' The florist was pleased and left the shop.

When the barber went to open his shop the next morning, there was a 'thank you' card and a dozen roses waiting for him at his door.

Later, a cop comes in for a haircut, and when he tries to pay his bill, the barber again replied, 'I cannot accept money from you , I'm doing community service this week.' The cop was happy and left the shop.

The next morning when the barber went to open up, there was a 'thank you' card and a dozen donuts waiting for him at his door.

Then a Member of Parliament came in for a haircut, and when he went to pay his bill, the barber again replied, 'I can not accept money from you. I'm doing community service this week.' The MP was very happy and left the shop.

The next morning, when the barber went to open up, there were a dozen MPs lined up waiting for a free haircut.

And that, my friends, illustrates the fundamental difference between the citizens of our country and the politicians who run it.

BOTH POLITICIANS AND DIAPERS NEED TO BE CHANGED OFTEN AND FOR THE SAME REASON

I so wish i was a Canadian citizen. The UK is beyond a joke these days. They've truly lost the plot. Sometimes i think we're born just to serve the state and not the other way around.

I've dreamt of visiting Canada and living there for a long long time. My great uncle moved there in the 70's and once i heard his stories of your great country i was hooked.

Oh and a big HELLO to my little sweetpea Dottiedoodles in toronto kiss

cheers

A Letter to the Prime Minister
Dear Mr. Harper,
Please find below my suggestion for fixing Canada's economy. Instead of giving billions of dollars to banks and car companies, that will squander the money on lavish parties and unearned bonuses, use the following plan:

There are about 20 million people over 50 in the work force. Pay them $1 million apiece severance for early retirement with the following stipulations:
1) They MUST retire. Twenty million job openings - Unemployment fixed.

2) They MUST buy a new Canadian CAR. Twenty million cars ordered - Auto Industry fixed.

3) They MUST either buy a house or pay off their mortgage - Housing Crisis fixed.

4) They MUST send their kids to school / college /university - Crime Rate fixed.

5) Buy $50 of alcohol / tobacco / petrol a week - There's your money back in duty / tax etc.

It can't get any easier than that!\

Yours truly,
Ordinary Joe Canadian
P.S. If more money is needed, have all members of parliament pay back their falsely claimed expenses and second home allowances.

Canada is the second largest country in the world by total area.

To Boldly Go Where No Canadian Has Gone Before....
The original Star Trek owes much to Canada. Two of its stars, William Shatner (Captain Kirk) and James Doohan (Scotty) were Canadian.

Canada sources approximately 20 to 30% of the world’s annual uranium output. As such, Canada is the largest producer of natural uranium in the world....oh, I did not know that...lol

Canada is widely believed to be the home of Santa Claus...Wahoo!!!

CANADIANS have a GOVERNMENT-SPONSORED HEALTH CARE PLAN that WORKS!

Downfall...taxes, but it's great here. peace

To me being Canadian means that we except the diversity that lives between and among us. I am first generation Canadian from Italian immigrants. They came from a city in Italy so they are not farmers nor the normal wasps. I grew up in the west of Toronto, and Mississauga. I am very grateful for what I have learned and what I can share with others about this great country we are in. We have land which is untouched still and would love to teach others how precious it all is. My parents came here when there was no OHIP, no taxes and had to make a living without the knowledge of the english language in the late 50's. It has given me a strength to say I am Canadian.

We have diversity here but the one thing that gets me is that we should at least have one rule that is for all not just because you came to this country and cannot speak or are from another third world country as it is called that you have a leaner law and given rights that others might not have. A rule is a rule. If we add the other nationality and their rules of life in it will get very confusing. I say this because here in Toronto, I feel that we are viewing visible minority as a way to dictate how to grow. I can see that the visible minority are becoming the majority and it feels a little weird as they believe in different values of life. Hopefully Canada will hold on into a culture that has one value of life and giving of that style. Too many ways in my opinion will create confusion.

I just would like to be able to visit the rest of Canada some day. peace

Yes. I had major brain surgery last year, it took 14 hours and it didn't cost me a dime. I was in a rehab hospital 4 months after that, and again it didn't cost me a dime.
I was in the US when I became ill, I was hospitalized, I had insurance but got discharged after a few weeks in the hospital because insurance said so. so I came back to Canada. what a great country!
The Canadian government and the province of Ontario have really taken care of me. Thank you Canada.
