With the recent passing of rock singer Ronnie James Dio (elf, rainbow, black sabbath and solo career), it set me to wondering who you think the music world is poorer for losing...it may be a musician who inspired you, or one you feel left his/her mark on popular culture...I miss the likes of Frank Zappa, James Brown, Johnny Cash and Ian Dury...they shaped my music appreciation and left behind a musical legacy and body of work which is as fresh today as it was when it was released...Who do you miss...LZ..

The day the music died was the same day AM radio died. If it wasn't for AM, I would have missed out on alot of great music that I never would have heard on FM rock stations. Songs like Patches, Rock Your Baby, Me and Mrs. Jones and artists like Judy Collins, Neil Sadaka, Roberta Flack and even Perry Como. Only the very best of the best songs from rock, rhythm and blues, folk, jazz, pop, motown, country, romance, instrumentals and dance music made it on the charts cool

Of course for me it would have to be Elvis. He started such a controversery with his gyrating hips and could sing anything and make it his own. crying

Now they get on stage with little to nothing covering their bodies and such weird videos and we let our kids and grand kids watch it without thinking about it twice.dunno

Ian Curtis.

He undoubtably left his mark on modern pop and rock culture.

Today, radio stations are specialized in what they play. Yea, some say they play a variety, but it is NOT new music, rather a compilation of various artists of the past. It is also usually specialized into soft rock, easy listening or oldies. There was a unity among people because everybody basically listened to the same songs. Bands and individuals had to really dig deep and out-do themselves within their own style of music to make it on the AM charts. I am basically a hard rock person, but I did like the best of the best most times because of it's creativity, uniqueness or application. The love songs always set the mood when you were with your girlfriend; and made you feel like you were with her when you weren't. Many of you are fortunate enough to still be with your love that you met during the AM era. What great memories you must share today when you hear those songs.

Gosh, there are several, IMO. Yes, there's Michael Jackson & Elvis... there's also Ricky Valens, Buddy Holly, The VanZandts (sp?), Marvin Gaye, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, etc. There are so many I could put in that category, IMO. wine

Back when AM radio was around, there was a music bridge between the generation gap with parents and children. Some of the AM songs I didn't appreciate at that time like I do today. No, they didn't Led Zepplin, Jethro Tull, Black Sabbath, but they would sing in the car to Mick Jagger's song Angie. The young and old will never share all the same music, but there was a bridge. That bridge burned down with the AM towers. Technically, FM is better than AM because of better frequency bands and sound quality. What I'm talking about is radio station format that was thrown out with the AM towers. Unfortunately, FM owners changed the format and I don't see it coming back. cool

People like Ronnie and Michael Jackson and many more don't ever die, their talent lives on not just on vinyl or CD for all to hear but every time someone tries to replicate their music and or words, speaking of which John Mayer does a what I think is a cool version of Crossroads on his current CD Battle Studies and even that in itself will inspire someone of this new generation who listens to it to seek out the original.I have been most fortunate and seen the likes of Led Zepplin,Black Sabbath and Deep Purple back in the 70's to name a few and those memories will always stay with me. daydream
It is not the dead that forget the living it is the living that forget the dead and that is when we truely die.

Freddie Mercury for me. Not because I was a great Queen fan but because he's one of a few who seem to have been around all my life like Roy Wood, Paul McCartney, Mick Jagger, Elton John or Noddy Holder, all of whom are fortunately still with us.conversing

I would regard Freddie Mercury and Johnny Cash as legends though. Their styles were so classical and unique that they advanced music in their own ways unlike the current perfectly digitally enhanced stuff.

We will never see their likes again.sad flower

I agree. But who would have thought that we would be carrying phones with us on trips to wherever? wink Or try to find a lifetime partner on a computer dating site? wine Things have changed, not sure it is all for the better. I do so enjoy the oldies but goodies and always will. dancing

By the way IMO is computer slang for in my opinion hug
