What would I do? I will do exactly what I did provided that there is good faith in all that the other person does.
I will give my all, body and soul with everything in between and a little more for good measure.

Serious jo, it is the hardest thing in life is my opinion to accept that the person you love does not return that love and nothing can be done to make them. It is a fact as you know that you can take a horse to water but you can not make it drink.
Forgive perhaps once or twice depending how serious the reason for you to have to forgive.
To make it work takes both people so on your own you cannot try. If you can not trust him then let him go. Painful now but better now than later as every day you hope and try on your own is a day wasted of your future life.
Do not be sad but stay a romantic!

Oh, I know that you can’t keep it forever, no need to cheat on yourself. As long as you are in love you will forgive as many times as there are to forgive, you will try and you will work and you will take risks and stand against hurricanes and do everything to keep the spark alive… But you can’t keep it for long, the speed is too fast and the voltage too high – you’d run out of fuel very soon. Just got burnt out by the intensity.
…and after the love has gone it’s only ashes and emptiness round you for ages…
…and I’d like to experience being in love at least one time more… at hell with all the cautions and consequences…

I must say this.
I agree totally with your post, and I am very happy you stuck to the subject and avoided other unpleasant issues.
Staying a romantic, albeit with feet planted on the ground, is the only way forward.
It works for me.

I can forgive but only try to make it work if the signs(his behaviour)point to this person;
a)wants to be with me.
b)has no major issues that can't be got past eg.alcoholism
c)he moderates his behaviour,because he cares and is willing to sort out catalyst of needing my forgiveness,so it doesn't happen again.
d)I really really really like him.
I am a helpless romantic,but I have 3 children who are adorable and rely on my having the strength to keep their world as protected and warm as possible,this alters what i am willing to risk,or put myself through.
Someone once told me (with regards to partner choices)you get what you settle for.Maybe this is true.
