Ain't he just the ants pants of Hollywood.

But he's not just a pretty face.

Kevin Costner has finally been able to get himself heard by Congress...

And at last BP decided to build a score of his company's machines to help clean up the oil spill.

How wonderful to see people with money actually put it to good use, quietly behind the scenes.

Congratulations to Mr Costner and the rest of his compnay for their tenacity in this current enrironmental crisis. My heart just breaks watching scenes on the media, of the innocent birdlife and sea creatures, fallen victim to oil BP's negligent, criminal attirude shown along the Gulf and beyond.

They should be driven out once and for all.

I couldn't believe one of BP's executives public comment that he for one can't wait for all this to be over, because ...HE WANTS HIS LIFE BACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

People like Kevin Costner are truly inspiring!

I agree! I wasn't aware of Mr Costner's contribution but the effect it appears to have had on wildlife and the eco-system is disgraceful, yes.

As for the executive you quoted, what a flippin' cheek.... I cannot imagine how an industry like that does not have measures in place to effectively and quickly deal with such situations, however unlikely its perceived to be. What happened to being prepared for every eventuality? There is simply NO excuse and he/they need to be held accountable!

Costner's biggest machine does 200 gallons of water a minute. Or 288,000 gallon of water daily.

BP release is between 800,000 and 1.2 m gallons of crude daily. Inserted into a water mass of 100s time that.

BP bought 32 for a test.

I can see it for localized control situations were not a lot of water needs to be processed. But is not 'the answer'. But no solution is the sole 'answer', this is going to take many solutions to solve.

But hats off Kevin Costner....tip hat

In 1995, Costner purchased Ocean Therapy Solutions, a company developing oil separation machines, from the US government for $24 million. The machines developed by the company were of little commercial interest until the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, when BP took six of the machines for testing in late May 2010. On June 9, that order was expanded to 32 anti-oil devices. WIKI

You might notice of all the people on CS complaining about BP, and congratulating Obama with concerns of this disaster, but you do not see them here. Facing, Fixing a problem is not of their agenda from behind their wall of seperation. If there is not anything in it for them, then they fail to recognize it.

Yes, amazing, isn't it, how something like that is kept so relatively hush, hush. The fact that it took him so long for him to be heard, is abominable, govt and BP alike.

Even worse is knowing this technology has been available, albeit needed some tweeking, since the last major oil spill. Maybe 10+ years isn't enough time to ensure they would be prepared to handle future crises!!!doh

And that exec...Well, I watched the interview-it will no doubt come back to haunt him. Good!!!

You're welcome, Karen. bouquet

I saw him interviewed on the early morning TV news yesterday. He and his brother poured millions of dollars of their own money into further research and tweeking of the engineering.

You're right, ttom, of-course. However, the basic concept is there. What is infuriating is that had there been continued research using even a small percentage of all of BP's profits, in collaboration with the likes of Mr Costner's company, who knows what could have been developed by now. After all, we have the technology to get to Mars!. Separating oil from water on a grand scale, shouldn't be rocket science! right?doh

The point being .....this f%$&^&k-up should never have lasted 55+ days and the technology and equipment should have been "required" to control such a mess BEFORE drilling that deep was allowed ...!!scold

It just goes to show ya - that money talks and politicians are bought and payed for dunno

No, it is not rocket science. But the sea is a harsher environment at times than space. Costner's centrifuge would work well in a boom containment area or small harbor, I think.

But the situation in the Gulf today.....is 1000s of square miles with slicks and then unknown number of crude blooms drifting from the bottom to near the surface. There it is a different deal.

That is the big scale that this spill situation faces us with. What we learned with the Exxon Valdes does not even well apply. That spill was in a narrow coastal entry bay with Islands that helps to contain it.

This one is out in the open water and running with the currents and winds. We are getting there on the control efforts and tech requirements......but I think that we have heard the last of
a junk shot for a time....))
