I am tired of the same vacations I always take!! I am also going to these big resorts that are all the same and by the end of the trip your still not relaxed!! I think I am going start off slow by heading to Rio de Janeiro Brazil and stay in a hostel! I never thought in my life of staying in a hostel till I did research and you actually get to meet cool people! I read some forums where they say you should make friends over the Internet that live or are traveling your way, which is why I joined this site!! I would want my friends to go but there to high maintained for this stuff. ANY ADVICE????

Excellent, go for it, my only advice would be is just do it and forget about researching the internet to 'make friends', experience the unknown. I'm 40 and my best memories all relate to my travels especially unplaned. Go for it mate

read the book 'a walk across america' by peter jenkens. this will get your mind rite, and to help prepare for your journey.
2 of my daughters and 4 of their friends went almost 2 years... They did much of Europe, the hostels not all are nice, and b very careful with your stuff it can get stolen easily... So they all slept on their bagpack, get the really good ones. Good shoes and lots of money and have a blast...they all did!!

Yeah i gotta say, be relaxed and enjoy your time but observe, stay alert and be smart... Show respect to people and culture and you wont have any problems ..
I always travelled solo, backpacking, without any hotel reservation. I went to many countries all over the world and these were my best experiences of life. You don't need to have Internet friends. You can make (and choose) friends when you get there. Read about the country, the way people are living, what to do and not to do, how to behave, ... Learn a few words of their language. Go to local restaurants or buy some foods at the market, use public transports.
More important: be open-minded and respect people!
It won't be relaxing holidays but so full of learning!

Do some reasearch on the net for some hostels but sometimes the price difference of a hostel and a good hotel is not much and a hotel is safer (my daughter has stayed in some hostels and she has not been very happy about it) Friends you will meet them everywhere. If you could find family housing would be really great because you could see how people live day by day. Good luck and chech the safety recomendations for Rio de Janeiro and follow them, take care.
Go for it and enjoy--i did and changed my life for the better check hostelworld/hostelbookers for hostels-go by the top rating-u cant go wrong--enjoyyyyy
