Why do people use it even when not texting? Do they believe it is "cool" or just lazyness? I often just skip it and don't bother decyphering it. How do you feel about this?

Because it is available to use that is why. I know people your age who use text language. Nothing wrong in keeping with the times. This does not necessarily mean you will lose the ability to spell in the correct manner.

well I think that originally it was to save space. Since when it started you were charged per packet bundle sent. The small ther packet, the less you spent on your texts. Hence the shortened words. You could get alot in a sentence when you cut out letters. Don't know about now though.

Amity: I teehee'd at lacyness
Anyway..i do not understand half of it..though i must admit i do happen to use short cuts alot
Anytime someone needs to take the time to decypher what the other is saying it is defeating the purpose of the short cuts I think. All I care about is too communicate and that is lost in texting.
Same is difficult or is it anynoying? when there is no space between a sentence.

That is really what I am afraid of. I am for myself happy I can read and write Enlish half way decent. I see here people who have no real command of the English language but do use texting.

You are right the texting is done in "shorthand" to save space. The trouble I am having is when it is taking over everywhere else.

It's a perfectly acceptable form of communication.... on mobile phones. I find it a kind of dumbing down, when used elsewhere... Could you imagine, for example receiving a C.V. with text speak. A relative of mine works in NYC as a speach and language therapist where over the past decade they've had to teach ebonics as a form of communication whilst english is suffering

Well what does it matter about their command of the English language, remember this is an international site with people from all over the world, who speak English at varying different levels. You can understand them right?
If they want to improve their English or their chosen language it is up to them.
If you are afraid that people will lose this ability then do something constructive about it. Help those people out in some way or another.

May people here have english as a second, third or more language. It's an international forum. That said I agree with your points

In a professional capacity it is simply not acceptable.

As you can see I still make plenty of mistakes myself when writing regular English. I don't yet use a cell phone as I have so far not seen the need. And no am not texting either. Perhaps someday?

I really am not attacking the fact but more a concern then when using texting all the time, the ability to learn another language is deminished somewhat. You said that I do understand them right? This is not so. When a person is using regular English but uses bad gramma, I can usuly figure it out. Not so when they use texting.

I did this piece of heresy to prove how inappropriate text speak can be at times. It has its place - but sometimes brevity removes meaning.
Words are more then a means of communication sometimes, and yes, this textspeak seems to take away the heart of the letters. The meaning behind these words. I will never write <3 to speak my heart. Well.. not seriously anyhow. But dudes.. I <3 you all.
Difficult to read for sure - most of the time I can't decipher it and more difficult for me is to actually do it. I always seem to get it screwed up and have to start over. I'd hazard in my lifetime I've sent maybe 10 or so messages! Its pathetic. So I don't bother doing it.
