I love the build-up to Christmas. Christmas day itself is an anti-climax but I love the build-up with the carols, lights, etc.. I can't tell you just how much I love it all! cheering

I just SO WISH I had someone to enjoy it with, who I could walk around looking at lights and listening to carol singers with.

An old wives' tale says that bread baked on Christmas Eve will never go mouldy.

Christmas pudding was first made as a kind of soup with raisins and wine in it.

The turkey was imported to France by the Jesuits and it is still known in some French dialects as a 'Jesuite'.

December 25th was not celebrated as the birthday of Christ until the year AD / ACE 440.

In 1649, Oliver Cromwell abolished Christmas and he declared it to be an ordinary working day. Anybody caught celebrating Christmas was arrested.

In the nineteenth century, the British Post Office used to deliver cards on Christmas morning.

Father Christmas has two addresses, Edinburgh and the North Pole. Letters addressed to 'TOYLAND' or 'SNOWLAND' go to Edinburgh, but letters addressed to 'THE NORTH POLE' have to be sent there because there really is such a place!

The first Christmas stamp was released in Canada in 1898.

Christmas crackers were invented by Thomas Smith. He had imported some French novelties to sell as Christmas gifts, but these were not popular until he wrapped them up and added a snapper.

It is not until Twelfth Night (the Feast of the Epiphany) that the figures of the Three Kings are supposed to be added to the Christmas crib.

Oh yuk, I hate sprouts. I can't wait for Christmas though! Not for the day itself because that's a let-down, but for the build-up to it. I LOVE that so much. From November onwards I listen to carols and try to get in the Christmas mood! laugh

Myths and facts about mistletoe
The early Christian church banned the use of mistletoe because of its association with Druids.
Druids believed mistletoe growing on oak trees was the most sacred form of the plant and it offered protection from all evil, as well as being the source of much magic.

The mystery of the mistletoe's method of reproduction led many people to link the plant with spontaneous generation, fertility and aphrodisiacs. In medieval times, women wishing to conceive would wrap mistletoe around their waist and wrists to increase their fertility.

The Roman writer Pliny believed mistletoe seeds would only germinate if they had passed through the system of a bird.

Traditionally in Scandinavia, if enemies met under mistletoe they would lay down their weapons and not fight until the following day.
According to Scandinavian legend, the god Balder the Beautiful is killed by a spear of mistletoe and so his grieving mother Frigg, the goddess of love and beauty, banishes the plant to the top of trees. When Balder comes backs to life, Frigg makes mistletoe a symbol of love.

In Brittany the plant is known as Herbe de la Croix because it is thought that Christ's Cross was made of mistletoe wood.

A man may kiss a woman standing under a sprig of mistletoe, only if he plucks a berry from the plant and gives it to her with each kiss. When all the berries have gone the kissing has to stop.
